Eurovision2020: Italy Presents The New Rules For The Sanremo Festival

RAI, the Italian broadcaster has announced the new rules of the 70th edition of the Sanremo Song Festival about to take place between February 4th, 2020 to February 8th, 2020 in Ariston Theater.

In the new rules of the song festival, the participating artists and their record companies must send RAI an official written statement whether the artist will want to go to Eurovision in case of winning before the first night of Sanremo2020. this regulation was created in order to put an end for the uncertainties that happens every year right after the competition winner is announced. for example, in 2016 Stadio that won the festival was later declined the opportunity to represent Italy in Stockholm and the honor was given to Francesca Michielin who came 2nd.

Another change that will happen in the upcoming contest will affect the quantities of the new acts versus the champion verdant acts. this year, the artists from both paths of the contest, the Campioni, and the “new proposals” will play together on the same night. and this is how the show is gonna look like:

Night one: February 4

The first 10 Campioni acts + First four new proposals will perform their acts.  the audience jury that represents demographically the Italian population and selected by RAI will vote for acts and select two new proposals that will qualify night three.

Night two: February 5

The second 10 Campioni acts + second group of four new proposals will perform their acts.  the audience jury will vote again and select two more new proposals that will qualify night three.

Night three: February 6

All 20 Campioni acts will sing a cover version of a song from the festival history celebrating its 70’s birthday. also, they can choose to perform together with Italian or foreign guest artists. the power to votes for this night winner will go to the show’s orchestra and backing singers.

The four “new proposals” qualifiers will perform again and two qualifiers will be determined by a combination of the press jury, the audience jury, and a televoting.

Night four: February 7

All 20 Campioni acts will perform their entries again. this time the press jury will decide the results of that show + the 2 remaining artists of the “new proposals” category will perform and the winner will be selected by like the previous night by a combination of the press jury, the audience jury, and a televoting.

Night five: February 8

Campioni category 20 acts will perform their entries for the last time. this night results decided by the press jury, the audience jury, and a televoting will be combined with the previous four nights show results and the top 3 will qualify for the final round.

After the three finalists are known and perform their entries again, the press jury, the audience jury, and a televoting will rank their performance and select the festival’s winner. in this round, the results will be based on the superfinal performance only. the scores from the previous rounds will be calibrated.

Last year, Mahmood that participated in the youth category of the show was the one selected to represent Italy In Tel-Aviv. His song “Soldi” was one of the most favorites to win the contest in Tel- Aviv and came 2nd with 472 points. “Soldi” keeps breaking every possible record ever since with triple platinum status and was announced as the all-time most streamed Eurovision song on Spotify.

I've started to follow Eurovision back in 1987 while I was only 4 years old. Ever since that night, Eurovision became my biggest passion. I created ESCBEAT to make sure that Eurovision music will stay forever and built the biggest Eurovision archive exist on streaming platforms
