They will perform the song “My Sister’s Crown “
Allocation in Semi-Final
Czechia will perform in the second half of semi-final 1 at Eurovision 2023.
Czechia is set to perform in the 13th position.
The country will perform after Azerbaijan, and before The Netherlands.
Musical Review
It is an electro folk song with some rap elements.
The song starts with a short introduction where the girls sing in a choir, alongside a drum beat.
In this part, which later on declared as the chorus, their singing demonstrates white voice singing.
The first verse comes after, the singer who sings it had a thin and high tone of voice.
Later on, she is replaced by another singer. The melody is based on a mid-tempo soft electronic beat with sampling of guitar riffs. The verse has a sparse structure, which permits us to focus on the English lyrics.
The chorus is being performed in Czech. It is much more powerful and has a faster rate.
The production in the chorus is richer. It relies on an electronic beat, guitar riff, drums and sampling of synth string. However, their singing is pure and powerful.
Thereafter, we get an additional verse, which is performed in a rap genre. The singer who performs this part has a mid-low and laid back tone of voice.
Once again, another chorus arrives. Thereafter, the first 2 singers sing an additional verse.
The electronic kick is stronger in the chorus that comes after.
The bridge is melosical and the production lays back, to emphasize the vocal aspect.
The last chorus is a hymn, they namely sing together with the string-like element.
Overall, Vesna created a unique sound with sharpened production. They manage to mix folk and pop, electronic and acoustic elements.
Having said this, there are some moments that I considered the production too overloaded.
Translated Lyrics
My sister won’t stand in the corner
nor will she listen to you
My sister, wild at heart
will never let you tie her down
My sister won’t stand in the corner
nor will she listen to youMy sister’s crown
Don’t take it down
Don’t take it down
Nobody has right to do it
She’s beautiful
And capable
She is her own queen
And she will prove itYou can take your hands back
No one wants more boys dead
We’re not your dolls
We’re not your dollsLife’s not a moneybag
Blood’s on your God’s head
You can’t steal our souls
You can’t steal our soulsMy beautiful sister
You are so strong
Brave and the only one
The crown is yours
My beautiful sister
You are so strong
Brave and the only one
The crown is yoursMy sister’s crown
Don’t take it downGive me your hand, don’t be afraid
Come swim with your sisters
There’s no place for hate in our sea
God forbid
Don’t be sad
Hop trop these girls ain’t here for you nonstop
Remember we’re sisters till the endYou can take your hands back
No one wants more boys dead
We’re not your dolls
We’re not your dollsLife’s not a moneybag
Blood’s on your God’s head
You can’t steal our souls
You can’t steal our soulsMy beautiful sister
You are so strong

The crown is yours
My beautiful sister
You are so strong
Brave and the only one
The crown is yoursMy sister’s crown
Don’t take it down
My sister’s crown
Don’t take it downAll the sisters of the world
Come together with a prayer
Choose love over powerMy beautiful sister
You are so strong
Brave and the only one
The crown is yours
My beautiful sister

You are so strong
Brave and the only one
The crown is yours
My beautiful sister
You are so strong
Brave and the only one
The crown is yoursWe are with you in our hearts
We stand for you
Poetry Analysis
The song can be understood in 2 different meanings:
- Women empowerment song. In this case, we can see it as a speech of women to the men in the world.
- The spokesperson talks about a woman that won’t be afraid to stand on her own. It isn’t clear whether she talks about a specific woman she knows. She considers this woman as a very important person to her, and that’s why she sees her as a sister. However, it can also follow the message of sisterhood of all the women in the world.
- Regarding the woman in the song – she is described as a brave one (“eild at heart”). She won’t let any man control her or weaken her (“will never let you tie her down”/ My sister won’t stand in the corner/ nor will she listen to you“)
- She asks the man in the story not to cancel the mentioned woman. Doing such a thing will let her down. She sees such an act as non ethical – “My sister’s crown/ Don’t take it down/ … Nobody has right to do it”.
- The next part represents all the women in the world – “You can take your hands back/
No one wants more boys dead/ We’re not your dolls”. They demand to be judged as what they are, and not to be objectified. IT IS ALSO A CALL TO STOP VIOLENCE AND AT - The society will judge violent men, you can’t run away from punishment if needed – “Life’s not a moneybag/ Blood’s on your God’s head/ You can’t steal our souls“.
- She tries to cheer up the sister from previously – “My beautiful sister/ You are so strong/ Brave and the only one/ The crown is yours”
- The spokesperson asks this woman to join them. As part of the sisterhood/womenhood, she will be protected and safe. They invite her to a place where violence doesn’t exist- “Give me your hand, don’t be afraid/ Come swim with your sisters/ There’s no place for hate in our sea … / Remember we’re sisters till the end/“.
- The spokesperson urged the addressee not to give up and to remember how powerful she is – “The crown is yours” , “Don’t take it down”.
- The song ends with the message that she will never walk alone – “We are with you in our hearts
We stand for you”.
- European countries are trying to cheer up their sister country Ukraine in its fight to survive the war. All metaphors can be understood in a way that the aggressive character in the song is a country that acts aggressively toward the addressee.
Initial Personal Ranking
8th overall in semi-final 1, 15th overal
The impact of the allocation in semi-final 1
Among the countries that usually vote for Czechia, 2 countries will vote in semi-final 1: Croatia and Israel
Betting Odds
On the 7th of Februrary 2023, Vesna won “ESCZ 2023“.
Ever since then, Czechia is in 5-8 place in the betting odds.
Most of the time, the country was 6-7 with the bookies.
Early Prediction
In this case, it will all depend on the live performance.
Judging by the one we have seen in “ESCZ 2023“, it lacks energy.
However, I want to believe that the tiny stage of the national final, alongside the lack of props and so on damaged the quality. Vocal performance is fine, but can definitely improve.
The song itself combines several genres, and therefore I believe it can create sufficient support in order to qualify (unless the vocal performance won’t be good enough).
For some reason, I believe it won’t do as good as the odds.
My prediction: 10-16 in the final

Käärijä – Cha Cha Cha

Selection Process and Song
Finland selected a song and an artist via a national selection “UMK 2023“.
7 artists competed in the national selection.
The final results were determined by a 25% international jury and a 75% public vote.
Käärijä won both the public vote and the national jury vote:

Käärijä will perform “Cha CHa Cha” at Eurovision 2023:
Allocation in Semi-Final
Finland was allocated to perform in the second half of semi-final 1 at Eurovision 2023.
Finland is set to perform in 15th position (last in the order), after The Netherlands
Musical Review
- It is a techno-rap song.
- The song starts with a fast drum beat, that’s joined by techno beat.
- Käärijä sings the first verse with a low and smokey tone of voice. The first verse is performed in a shape of dialogue between the singing and the melody. As between the singing parts, we can hear the trumpet like beat.
- The melody is faster and kicking more aggressively, both on the melody side and both on the vocal side. The melody is based on heavy drums and an electric guitar.
- The second verse is based on the same sound as the first one, but this time we can hear the electric guitar as part of the melody as well.
- The chorus starts with drums, bass and electric guitar. The beat changes along this part, but it is still bold.
- As the last third part of the song starts, Käärijä moves from rapping/speaking to something that sounds more like singing.
- This part is more melodical and based on a calmer electric guitar and drums beat. The electronic beat is replaced with some effects over his singing.
- The bridge focuses on metal-like voice effects, which sounds a little bit robotic.
- The last chorus opens with a short solo of electric guitar. The melody is uniform and easier to listen to.
- Towards the end, he shouts the “cha cha cha cha” again.
- On one hand, the song is different and unique, there’s no chance any country will send an entry that sounds like this. I’m sure it will be a song that will appeal to some listeners.
- On the other hand, it is a song that’s hard to swallow. Something in the interpretation sounds too aggressive, and at certain point it made me lose the momentum.
- I do think that the last part of the song is much more accessible.

This exhausting week and many long days are behind
There’s only bar and piña colada on my mind
There is some time for a few, the night is still youngish
This icy shell is something I have to demolishHolding on the drinks with both hands tied on them like a
Cha cha cha cha cha cha cha
No, there’s no tomorrow when I grab a pint tightly like a
Cha cha cha cha cha cha cha
No, wanna mess my head up and free my mind of fear like a
Cha cha cha cha cha cha cha, no
And I stay on this seat until I have to climb off it like a…A couple piña coladas I have devoured
Yet the expression I have on my face is sour
Yeah yeah ye ye yeh
There is some time for a few, the night is still youngish
This icy shell is something I have to demolish
The floor is calling me when I’m no longer so frozen
Like a cha cha cha I am approachin’Holding on the drinks with both hands tied on them like a

Like a cha cha cha
Cha cha cha cha cha cha cha aa-aah
Like a cha cha cha
Cha cha cha cha cha cha cha

Poetry Analysis
- The song deals with the ongoing tiring routine and how people can forget about it.
- After the long week, drinking piña colada at the bar can help us – “This exhausting week and many long days are behind/ There’s only bar and piña colada on my mind“.
- The spokesperson sees alcohol as a remedy, and therefore refuses to release it – “Holding on the drinks with both hands tied on them.”
- After drinking some alcohol, he is ready to go to the dance floor, where he can surrender to the beat and forget about the dance beat – “I head towards the dance floor like a cha cha / And this world ain’t making me scared no more“.
- However, even a great party can’t make him forget about the reality – “Yet the expression I have on my face is sour“
- For a moment, it seems like drinking and dancing makes him defeat his fears – “I head towards the dance floor like a cha cha cha/ And this world ain’t making me scared no more“
Initial Personal Ranking
9th is semi-final 1, 23th place overall.
The impact of the allocation in semi-final 1
Among the countries that usually vote for Finland, 5 countries will vote in semi-final 1: Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Ireland and Serbia
Betting Odds
On the 25th of February 2023, Käärijä won the national selection.
On this night, Finland was 3rd with the bookies. After 6 days, Finland increased its chances with being 2nd in the odds. Ever since then, the country has mostly been in the 2nd place, with some days spent in the 3rd place.
Early Prediction
It seems like Finland has found the formula for a song that will get a lot of attention from the public. The song stands out for its uniqueness, and of course the performance will help a lot (bold green costume and so on).
However, I think that for some people it might be too much.
Regarding the jury, I think the song will get a lower score (compared to the public vote).
Therefore, I predict Finland will end in a very high position: 1-5 in the final (with lower chances to win).

Mia and Dion – Burning Daylight
Dion Cooper is a 28-year-old. He has dreamed of being a musician since the age of 4.
He mentioned Toto, The Beatles, and Jimi Hendrix as his biggest influences in music.
In 2021, he released his debut single ““”Too Young, Too Dumb“.
Mia Nicolai is 26 years old. She started taking piano lessons at the age of 3.
Mia states drama, ballet, music, and storytelling are her biggest passions in life.
David Bowie is one of her favorite musicians.
Mia has lived in Melbourne, London, Mexico, New York, and LA in recent years.
Her debut single is “Set Me Free”
The duo were matched for the aim of Eurovision.

Selection Process and Song
Since 2013, The Netherlands has internally selected a song and an artist for Eurovision 2023.
A professional committee, assigned by the Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS, was in charge of the selection process.
On the 1st of November 2022, it was revealed that Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper will carry The Netherlands flag in Eurovision 2023.
Duncan Laurence (Eurovision 2019 winner) and songwriter Jordan Garfiel approached them and suggested submitting a song for Eurovision 2023. The 4 musicians created a song together that impressed the professional committee and ended up selecting them for Eurovision 2023
The duo will perform the song “Burning Daylight”
Allocation in Semi-Final
The Netherlands was allocated to perform in the second half of semi-final 1 at Eurovision 2023.
The Netherlands is set to perform in 14th position after Czechia and before Finland.
Musical Review
It is a modern ballad.
The song starts with a simple and calm piano playing. In the background, we can hear sampled backing vocals. Dion is the first one to sing. He has a mid-low tone of voice.
The pre-choprus is a little bit faster.
The chorus opens with powerful singing by Dion. We get some more colors of his voice, as he lengthens some syllables.
The second verse is performed by Mia. She has a fragile, stable and high tone of voice. She uses some manners, by the right dozen. This part features a soft drum beat, as well as echo and backing vocals. Pre-chorus is faster.
They sing the second chorus together, and in this part we can also hear the guitar playing.
This chorus is longer and more effective.
They sing the bridge together, where each one of them sings more powerfully. In this part, the melody is based on guitar and drum playing. Mia finalized with some long notes.
The end of the song is acoustic and intimate.
Overall, the song doesn’t bring anything new to the table. But I do see it as a magical one: the simplicity, the way their voices combine and the message of the song.
Starting from the second time I heard it, the song was quite memorable for me.
I have a feeling they will be able to impress even better than expected.
Lyrics
I don’t find any joy anymore
From the same old cycle
I don’t know what made me happy before
From all to zero
Where did I go?Between falling and running
I’ve been trying to get on my feet in time
I’ve never been good at crying
Always wanted to be the tough typeI’m sorry I’m just human
I’m losing myself while chasing highs
I’m losing myself while chasing highs
I’m burning daylightHmm, I don’t believe in God anymore
‘Cause where did she go
I don’t know what I’ve been looking for
I guess a heroBetween falling and running
I’ve been trying to get on my feet in time
I’ve never been good at crying
Always wanted to be the tough typeI, I’m sorry I’m just human
I’m losing myself while chasing highs
I’m burning daylight
I’m scared that I’m falling behind
I’m losing myself while chasing highs
I’m losing myself while chasing highs
I’m burning daylightGoodbye old life
Goodbye old life
Goodbye old life
Goodbye old life
Goodbye old life
Goodbye old life
Poetry Analysis
- The song talks about human soulitude, how to handle problems and how all of us are quite similar, even though it doesn’t look.
- The first spokesperson admits that the routine and regular habits makes him wonder about how joyful life is. He used to be a happy person, and out of the blue this feeling has just gone.
- He describes life as a race, sometimes you fall, sometimes you run. In this race, your aim is to make it on time.
- In tough times, crying is welcome. So far, he tends to be a strong and rough person. But now it seems that’s no way to avoid crying.
- After all, we are all humans, we can rise and fall, we can break and cry. Life is an ongoing battle where we are trying to chase highs – achieving the best and the fastest.
- A second spokesperson tells us about what breaks her. She has had a crisis, who let her stop believing in god. She looked for a hero to save her – but eventually she realized that only she can be the hero to save her.
- The song ends with acceptance – “goodbye old life”. It is time to step up, continue and keep on going.
Initial Personal Ranking
5th in semi-final 1, 12th overall.
The impact of the allocation in semi-final 1
Among the countries that usually vote for The Netherlands, 4 countries will vote in semi-final 1: Germany, Malta, Switzerland and Israel
Betting Odds
The song was released on the 1st of March 2023.
On this day, The Netherlands was 11th in betting odds.
On the 2 consecutive days, the country was 13th and 15th with the bookies.
Thereafter, the country was 15-17 at odds for 7 days.
Thereafter, the Netherlands was in place 18-20 for 16 days.
Now, The Netherlands is 17th with the bokies.
Early Prediction
Personally, I think many people are sleeping on this one.
It isn’t a contest to win the contest, but I do see it as a potential dark horse.
With convincing visuals and stable vocals, it can deliver well. Qualifying for the final will be a challenge, but a possible one.
In the final, I can see them succeeding with the help of the jury.
Therefore, my prediction is 11-16 in the final.

Alessandra Mele – Queen of Kings
Alessandra Mele is a 20 year-old Italian-Norwegian singer-songwriter.
She was born to an Italian father and a Norwegian mother.
When she was 12 years old, she won the local talent show “VB Factor”.
In 2021, she moved to Norway with her maternal grandparents.
There, she studied at the Lillehammer Institute of Music Production and Industries.
In 2022, she competed in “The Voice of Norway 2022″, where she was eliminated in the live shows.

Selection Process and Song
Norway held a national selection for Eurovision 2023 – “Melodi Grand Prix 2023”.
A total of 321 artists competed in the national selection in 3 semi-finals.
9 of them qualified for the final.
The results were determined by a 50% international jury and a 50% public vote.
Alessandra Mele won both the international jury vote and the public vote.
She will perform the song “Kings of Queens”
Allocation in Semi-Final
Norway will perform in the first half of semi-final 1 at Eurovision 2023.
Norway is set to perform is in 1st position, before Malta .
Musical Review
It is a Scandinavian mid tempo pop song.
The song starts with its chorus, with piano playing and high tone of voice.
It starts like a ballad, but soon later, you can observe it won’t continue the same way.
The first verse is based on piano playing and drum beat. Her voice is powerful, but still tends to be of a high tone. The pre-chorus builds up with a beat that’s getting stronger and stronger until exploding.
The chorus is faster, and relies on a dance beat, with backing vocalists supporting her.
Thereafter, we get another chorus with a greater presence of the beat and guitar playing.
The bridge begins with violin playing and ends with a very high whistle note.
The song is catchy and contemporary. Even though the main “player” is the chorus, I still think the build-up in the pre-chorus upgraded the song a lot.
Lyrics
She, queen of the kings
Runnin’ so fast, beatin’ the wind
Nothin’ in this world could stop the spread of her wings
She, queen of the kings
Broken her cage, threw out the keys
She will be the warrior of North and Southern SeasGot raven hair, it’s dark as night
Icy eyes, out of sight, out of sight
Her heart in spite, is warm and bright
Her smile awakes the Northern LightLookin’ out she calls
Lai, lai-da-dai-dai-da
Who will conquer all, all?Her name is she, queen of the kings
Runnin’ so fast, beatin’ the wind
Nothin’ in this world could stop the spread of her wings (Hеy!)
She, queen of the kings
Broken hеr cage, threw out the keys
She will be the warrior of North and Southern SeasA firestone forged in flames
The wildest card, run the game, run the game
Can’t stay the same in this world of change
Don’t fear the pain, just break the chainLookin’ out she calls
Lai, lai-da-dai-dai-da
Who will conquer all, all?Her name is she, queen of the kings
Runnin’ so fast, beatin’ the wind (Hey!)
Nothin’ in this world could stop the spread of her wings
She, queen of the kings
Broken her cage, threw out the keys (Hey!)
She will be the warrior of North and Southern SeasLai, la-da-dia
Ra, rai-ri-rai-rai-ri
Lai, la-da-dia
Lai, li-li-la
Lai, la-da-dia
La-la-la-la
La-la-la-la
Ah-ah-ah-ahHer name is she, queen of the kings
Runnin’ so fast, beatin’ the wind (Hey!)
Nothin’ in this world could stop the spread of her wings
She, queen of the kings
Broken her cage, threw out the keys (Hey!)
She will be the warrior of North and Southern Seas (Hey!)
Poetry Analysis
- It is a woman empowerment song.
- The mentioned woman in the song is a powerful one. She defeats the wind, controls herself with free flying.
- It is hinted that she had gone through a conflict, as she is described as an animal in a cage. However, she managed to break the cage and find her path to freedom.
- As in Nordic/Scandinavian, she controls the northern and southern seas. In other words, she is strong, wise and can split her presence between different places.
- In the first verse, we learn about her appearance (raven hair, icy eyes). Even though she might be tough and too strong, she is warm and lovely.
- The song calls for activism and fighting for our own rights. It can be translated as a call for women to stand on their own: “Run the game/ Can’t stay the same in this world of change/ Don’t fear the pain, just break the chain“.
Initial Personal Ranking
7th in semi-final 1, 14th overall
The impact of the allocation in semi-final 1
Among the countries that usually vote for Norway, 4 countries will vote in semi-final 1: Sweden, Latvia, Ireland and Finland
Betting Odds
On the 4th of February 2023, Alessandra won the “Melodi Grand Prix 2023″.
In the first 4 days afterwards, Norway was 9th, 7th, 7th and 4th in the betting odds.
Thereafter, Norway has been 3rd for 2 weeks.
5 additional days have been spent in the 4th place, and then 9 days in the 5th place.
Since the 8th of March, Norway is in 4th place in the table.
Early Prediction
There’s no doubt Norway will make it to the final.
My only concern is that the “Melodi Grand Prix 2023″ features auto-tune. Therefore, we will have to wait for a live performance.
However, assuming she can do it properly, I will predict Norway will end in 5-10 place in the final.

Loreen – “Tattoo”

Selection Process and Song
As always, Sweden held its national selection “Melodifestivalen”.
28 artists participated in the selection, 12 of them qualified for the final.
Loreen won both the international vote and the public vote.

She will perform the song “Tattoo”:
Allocation in Semi-Final
Sweden was allocated to perform is in the second half of semi-final 1 at Eurovision 2023.
Sweden is set to perform in 11th position, after Moldova and before Azerbaijan.
Musical Review
It is an electo dance pop song with some schlager elements.
The song opens with an instrumental part, composed of percussion and synth string elements.
The first verse starts mysriusly, with Loreen‘s singing sensually. WE can hear some breaths and intense expressions of words. The melody is based on keyboards playing, with the same beat from the introduction, but this time with lower volume.
The pre-chorus is more powerful, and she sings it with bigger notes and a confident attitude. This part is “cleaner” production wisely, just to give more space to her voice.
The chorus is the most powerful part of the song, where Loreen sings very powerfully.
The melody is more intense, and it feels like a background soundtrack to Loreen’s great voice.
The electronic beat in the chorus is simple, yet effective. Sometimes it is a little bit hard to understand part of the sung words.
The second verse has a different style. Keyboard and string playing is faster and with lower pitch.
She sings this part with a less offert, and a higher tone of voice, that’s somehow even more fragile.
The pre-chorus brings the electro beat back to the business. She sings powerfully, almost outcries.
Thereafter, we get another chorus, which has the same structure as previously.
After the chorus, comes the outro, which starts with an ethnic instrumental part, composed of string elements. This part gives the song a spiritual flavour. Loren joins in with fragile falsetto singing.
Thereafter, we get a final powerful chorus. Production is more sparse this time.
The production is done wisely, so there’s more space for singing.
As the song progresses, we find more layers in the melody and the production. It becomes intricate. A blend of electronic and acoustic elements creates a lush and textured soundscape.
Overall, the song suggests a combination of modern production and a more classic schlagar music. Loreen’s voice, together with the energetic performance, wraps it up effectively.
Lyrics
I don’t wanna go
But baby, we both know
This is not our time
It’s time to say goodbye
Until we meet again
‘Cause this is not the end
It will come a day
When we will find our wayViolins playing and the angels crying
When the stars align then I’ll be thereNo, I don’t care about them all
‘Cause all I want is to be loved
And all I care about is you
You’re stuck on me like a tattoo
No, I don’t care about the pain
I’ll walk through fire and through rain
Just to get closer to you
You’re stuck on me like a tattooI’m letting my hair down
I’m taking it cool
You got my heart in your hand
Don’t lose it, my friend
It’s all that I gotViolins playing and the angels crying
When the stars align then I’ll be thereNo, I don’t care about them all
‘Cause all I want is to be loved
And all I care about is you
You’re stuck on me like a tattoo
No, I don’t care about the pain
I’ll walk through fire and through rain
Just to get closer to you
You’re stuck on me like a tattooNo, I don’t care about them all
‘Cause all I want is to be loved
And all I care about is you
You’re stuck on me like a tattoo
No, I don’t care about the pain
I’ll walk through fire and through rain
Just to get closer to you
You’re stuck on me like a tattooAll I care about is love
Oh, oh, oh
All I care about is love
You’re stuck on me like a tattoo
Poetry Analysis
- It is a song that deals with love and breakup
- The first verse begins with an expression of closeness . The spokesperson approaches the addressee with the nickname “baby.” However, she isn’t positive. There’s an unknown reason to prevent them of being together.
- However, it seems like it is all about timing. Relatively to the time of the story, they can’t meet and be together. She promises they will meet again in the future.
- They are meant to be together – “violin playing, and the angels crying“. Therefore, the violin showcases the sad atmosphere, which is also contributed by the angles crying.
- She doesn’t care about what people will say. The most important thing for her is to be loved by the one she loves. She keeps on thinking about him, and the memory about him accompanies her on every single moment (“All I think about is you / You stuck on me like a tattoo“).
- She realizes there’s a price she will pay when they are together (“I’ll walk through fire and through rain“)
Initial Personal Ranking
4th overall, 3rd in semi-final 1
The impact of the allocation in semi-final 1
Among the countries that usually vote for Sweden, 5 countries will vote in semi-final 1: Norway, Finland, Malta , Latvia and Czechia
Betting Odds
Sweden has officially selected Loreen to represent the country on the 11th of March 2023. Ever since then, Sweden has been stable as the winner by betting odds.
Early Prediction
There’s no doubt Sweden will qualify for the final, after ending in top 3 of semi-final 1.
The biggest question is whether Sweden is stepping up to the 7th win in the history of the contest.
