Eurovision 2025: Semi-Final Voting Might Change

Speaking to the EuroTrip podcast, the Eurovision 2025 Executive producers Reto Peritz and Moritz Stadler shared their thoughts about the semi-final voting procedure.

Reto Peritz said:

“We are thinking of changes for the Semi-Finals,” The voting is amazing in the Grand Final – there are a lot of emotions. For the Semi-Finals it’s not that exciting because you just say who’s in the Grand Final. So, we are thinking a lot about this with our creative team on how to make the voting and the final results for the Semi-Finals more exciting.”

It isn’t the first time the results have come to the discussion table. In 2023, during the semi-final rehearsals, the BBC experimented with a different format: The artists had to stand side by side on stage, waiting to be announced as qualifiers, while the rest delegation members stayed in the green room.
Due to heavy criticism, the BBC has decided not to use this method.

Regarding the length of the show, it seems that the new executive producers think the grand final lasts for too long (more than 4 hours, in the last few editions).
SRG SSR is interested in finding ways to shorten the show:

Moritz Stadler commented:

“There is a limit where it becomes too long.
In 2025 we will not extend it, but we are looking at how to shorten it.
What’s clear is that there are incompressible elements in the show that you cannot shorten.
What you can play is the duration of interval acts, the duration at the end of the voting procedure
We are looking at this in a reasonable way, but we need to be conscious of the amount of things we need to fit into this show to bring the feeling across the screen.
We will find the right compromises, but we will not divide the time by two – that’s impossible”

A total of 38 countries will compete in Basel: the 37 participating countries from Eurovision 2024, and Montenegro.

Eurovision 2025 will be held in Basel, Switzerland on the 13th, 15th and 17th of May 2025
