Iceland: RÚV Board of Directors Opposes Eurovision 2027 Participation

Last year, Icelandic RÚV withdrew from the Eurovision Song Contest 2026.
Iceland was one of 5 countries that decided to pull out of the contest, along with the Netherlands, Ireland, Spain, and Slovenia.

RÚV released a statement on its official website, revealing that the Board of Directors discussed Eurovision 2027 participation.
The board of directors has 9 members. Among them, 6 members expressed their support for boycotting Eurovision for the second year in a row. They stated that Iceland won’t participate in Eurovision as long as Israel is allowed to take part in the contest.

Diljá Ámundadóttir Zoëga, who sits on the board of RÚV, published a post oh her Facebook, relating to the decision: The board directed the radio director “to notify the EBU that the Icelandic National Broadcasting Corporation will not participate in Eurovision in 2027 unless Israel is barred from participating in the competition. The previous call to the EBU that Israel be expelled from the competition is reiterated, and it is requested that the radio director convey that reiteration

In November, the RÚV board approved a resolution directing the EBU to expel Israel from the ongoing competition.

Stefán Jón Hafstein, chairman of the board, says in an interview with a news agency that since the EBU has not taken a substantive position on it, the situation remains unchanged:

“It’s quite clear that six board members were on the same page as at the end of last year.”

Will Iceland participate in Eurovision 2027, or will it keep boycotting the contest for a second year in a row?
The final decision will follow in the coming weeks, but it seems more likely that the country won’t participate in Eurovision 2027.

Eurovision 2027 will be held in Burgas, Bulgaria on May 11th, 13th, 15th, 2027
