Ukraine: Details About The National Selection For Eurovision 2020

Ukraine national broadcaster (UA:PBC) has revealed details regarding the Eurovision 2020 national selection. The country will again choose the song and artist via their traditional show “Vidbir”. The national selection this year will be broadcast live on STB channel.

Vidbir 2020 will have 3 live shows: 2 semi finals and Grand Final:

The first Semi Final will be held on Saturday the 8th of February 2020.

The second Semi final will be held on Saturday the 15th of February 2020.

And the Grand Final will be held on Saturday the 22nd of February 2020.

It is most likely that each semi final will include 8-9 acts. Moreover, the selection will be probably combine a decision of televoting and a jury panel.

The Ukrainian selection process get a lot of attention in 2020, after the country has decided to withdraw from Eurovision 2019. During 2019 season of Vidbir some of the participants (including the winer Maruv) were asked to declare their political positions about the Ukraine – Russia conflict and Crimea in particular.

Maruv, that won the contest with her excellent entry “Siren Song” was asked to sign an agreement which limits her existing and future career in Russia. Furthermore, the contract demanded that all the song rights should transferred for to “Warner” international label.

From the minute maruv won Vidbir, she stop the odds of wining Eurovision 2019. Her decision to step back from representing Ukraine in tel Aviv and the fact that no other artists agreed to sign on the network demands, made Ukraine to withdraw from the contest.

In order to prevent a similar scenario in the new season of Vidbir, the Ukrainian broadcast UA:PBC 2020 has reveald today new regulations for the show future acts. For example:

The participant have not performed in the territory of the Russia since 2014. And/or have not entered the territory of Crimea in violation of the Ukrainan legislation. The full regulations file can be found here:

UA:PBC mention that the selected artist won’t have the responsibility in terms of music only, but also the political values of the Ukrainian society. In return, the network will fund Ukraine representative whenever it’s needed.
