It’s official! Spain will try to change its fate in Eurovision by changing the method of song and artist selection. Spanish broadcaster RTVE, Generalitat Valenciana, and the Benidorm City Council have come to an agreement. Spain will celebrate its wonderful music at an annual festival. The festival will be held in Benidorm City and will be used as a mechanism to select an artist and singer for Eurovision 2022.
The songs in the line-up will be chosen by a griup of expert jury.
The festival, yet to be named, will include 3 live shows: 2 semi-finals and a grand final.
The festival will be held at the beginning of 2022 (probably in January or February)
At today’s official event, Ruth performed several songs, including her Eurovision entry.
José Manuel Pérez Tornero, the president of RTVE, said that the idea isn’t only to change direction but aiming to win as well. He believes in the Spanish music industry and especially in the young local artists.
Amalia Martínez de Velasco (Head of content, RTVE) said that the media and content team will take the event seriously. They will work with professionals to create unforgettable TV shows.
Ximo Puig, the president of Generalitat Valenciana explained that Benidorm is the intersection point between music, Europe, and diversity. With the Benidorm Festival, the intention is to achieve an emotional and tourist reactivation of the Valencian Community.
The festival of Benidorm was established back in 1959, following the steps of The Italian music festival “Festival Di Sanremo“. The idea to revive the festival was born in order to give a new spirit to a well-known brand. . It took place annually until 2006, (except for the years 1979 1984, 1986, 1992).
Some big names in pain have participated in the festival over the years:
- Karina (Maribel Llaudes) participated in the festival in the 1960’s, and represented Spain at Eurovision 1971
- Julio Iglesias (won the festival in 1968, represented Spain at Eurovision 1970),
- Coral Segovia (won the festival in 2005 and participated in the Spanish national selection in the past),
- Barei (participated in the festival in 2001, and represented Spain at Eurovision 2016)
