Around the Continent 2022 – Week 12

As we continue our weekly series Around The Continent, we will discuss the news and tell the story of each country’s preparation for Eurovision Song Contest 2022.


At the moment, 33 countries have confirmed participation at Eurovision 2022:

Albania, Australia, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, The Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy (Host Country), Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine.

However, 3 of them have hinted at participation and haven’t released a public announcement: Bulgaria, Germany, Malta.

What About The Rest?

This leaves us with uncertainty regarding the 6 countries that participated in Eurovision 2021 but haven’t confirmed participation for Eurovision 2022 yet. They are:
Austria, Russia, the United Kingdom, Cyprus, North Macedonia, and Moldova.

Moreover, it is still unknown whether Armenia, Montenegro, and Turkey will take a part in the upcoming Eurovision.

Festivali I Këngës 60“ will be officially revealed on Friday the 22nd of October 2021.

One week is left until the submission window for the festival closes (September 30th, 2021).

Until then, here are some rumored artists to take part in the Albanian national selection:

#1. Elhaida Dani

The singer has already won “Festivali I Këngës 53” and therefore represented Albania at Eurovision 2015. She performed the song “I’m Alive” and finished 17th in the grand final

Elhaida was a guest on a TV show on ABC New Albania.
There, she hinted at participation at “Fetivali I Këngës 60“, by saying she will be in Albania in December for a music project.

#2. Mentor Haziri

Mentor Haziri is a 41-year old Albanian singer. He participated twice in Kënga Magjike (in the years 2017 and 2018). The singer hinted he would participate at the festival on Top Radio Albania.
According to Albanian media, his song’s subject will be the Covid pandemic

Other rumored artists are:

#3. Xhesika Polo

Xhesika Polo is a 24-year-old Albanian singer. The singer participated at the “Fetivali I Këngës” multiple times, including last year when she performed the ballad “Më mbron“:

The singer was one of our choices on the wishlist artists for Eurovision.

#4. Arilena Ara

The singer won the 58th edition of the festival. Therefore, she should have represented Albania at Eurovision 2020 with the song “Fall From The Sky“. However, Eurovision 2020 was canceled.

#5. Tiri Gjoci

The singer participated in 2 editions of the festival: 56th and 58th.
In his last participation, he performed the song “Me Gotën Bosh“:

#6. Ronela Hajati

Ronela is a 32-year-old Albanian singer, songwriter, and dancer.
Her debut album “Pron” was released earlier this year

#7. Besa Kokëdhima

Besa Kokëdhima is a 35-year-old Albanian singer and songwriter. In 2006, she released her debut album “Besa and represented Albania at MTV Exit Concert.
In 2009, the singer entered the “Selecţia Naţională 2009” – Romania’s national selection for Eurovision 2009 with the song “Nothin’ Gonna Change“. She reached the semi-finals of the contest. She was also one of the coaches in “The Voice of Albania

The singer was one of our choices on the wishlist artists for Eurovision.

#8.Alban Ramosaj 

Alban Ramosaj is a 25-year-old Albanian – Dutch singer, songwriter, director, editor, actor, and model. 
In 2021, he competed in “Kënga Magjike“, this time he won the whole contest with the song “Thikat E Mia” (Eng: my knives).
The singer was one of our choices on the wishlist artists for Eurovision.

#9. Ardit Çuni

Ardit Çuni is a 25-year-old Albanian singer.

The submission window for “Australia Decides 2022” will close on the following Sunday, the 26th of September 2021.

It is still unknown whether Armenia will participate in Eurovision 2022.
However, in the following video, we’re able to see the Armenian singer Saro Gevorgyan getting a proposal from Philipp Kirokorov to represent the country at Eurovision.
It seems that Kirokorov would like to compose the song.

Saro Gevorgyan won the “New Wave 2021″ contest and also was one of the backing vocalists for Srbuk at Eurovision 2019.

Azerbaijani broadcaster iTV confirmed that the country will participate in Eurovision 2022.
It is still unknown how they will select the act for Eurovision, but most likely be an internal selection.

In an open call for dancers to participate in the Finnish national selection “UMK 2022“,
Finnish broadcaster YLE mentioned that “UMK 2022″ will be held on the 8th week of 2022, which means the last week of February 2022.
Traditionally, “UMK” is held on Saturdays and thus we can infer that “UMK 2022” will probably be held on Saturday the 26th of February 2022.

Georgian broadcaster GPB confirmed the country’s participation at Eurovision 2022.
The broadcaster didn’t supply any information regarding the mechanism for Eurovision 2022.

Greek broadcaster ERT is collecting suggestions from Greek record labels.
The deadline is the 10th of October 2021.
Greek Music Labels can submit their proposals. They should name artists with 1-3 songs. ERT will base its decision not only on the songs but on other parameters as well.
According to Greek media (and especially EurovisionFun), here are the leading rumored artists:

#1. Evangelia 

Evangelia is 29 years old Greek singer. She lived in Crete and in New Jersey.
In her music, she manages to combine modern pop with traditional Greek elements.
According to unofficial sources, her intended song for Eurovision is ready and it follows her general style. Evangelia is one of Panik records‘ proposals to ERT.

#2.Good Job Nicky

One of the rising stars in Greece who was recommended as an artist we would like to see at Eurovision in the Looker series.
The singer is about to release a new album, but the date of release depends on whether he would represent Greece at Eurovision 2022.
Good Job Nicky‘s song will probably be mid-tampo with a cinematic vibe.
The song is ready, but the production is still being edited. It is possible that the singer collaborated on the song with other artists as writers. The record company that proposed Nicky is COBALT.

The singer shows significant interest in representing her country once again.
She hasn’t found her song already, but it seems she will collaborate with several different writers. Therefore, she might submit more than one song.
Kalomira will probably propose an uptamop pop song

#4.Amanda Georgiadis

Amanda Georgiadis is a Greek singer who lives in Norway.
The singer wants to submit an emotional ballad. She didn’t write the song by herself.

#5. Elias Kozas

Koza Mostra & Agathon Iakovidis represented Greece at Eurovision 2013. They performed the song “Alcohol is Free” and ended up 6th in the grand final.

Elias Kozas will propose himself as a solo artist as well as another proposal with the band. According to EurovisionFun, the singer will submit several rock songs in English.

 #6. Joanne (Ioanna Georgakopoulou)

The singer won the latest edition of “The Voice of Greece“. Her coach was Eurovision 2005 winner Elena Paparizou.
19 years old Joanne conquered the audience’s heart with her voice.

For Eurovision, she would like to perform a modern upbeat pop song.
Her record label is MINOS EMI.

Italy's broadcaster Rai announces Eurovision Host City bid process 🇮🇹 -  Eurovision Song Contest

At the moment, there are 5 candidates to host the upcoming contest: Turin, Milan, Bologna, Rimini, and Pesaro.
However, it seems that 2 of those cities have re-launched their applications.
Rimini has decided to allocate an economic contribution of over 6 million euros. The aim is to convince the EBU and Italian broadcaster RAI to choose Rimini as the host city.

Another city that has considered updating their proposal is Turin. From the beginning, it seemed like the city had the best package to host Eurovision 2022. However, it seems that they want to ensure it. Therefore, Turin will probably update their proposal to 7 million euros.
The potential venue for Turin is Pala Alpitour:

Polish broadcaster TVP released a statement regarding the plans of the country for Eurovision 2022.

According to TVP, the artist and the song for Eurovision 2022 will be selected through an internal selection – “KRAJOWE ELIMINACJE” (Eng: National Eliminations).
In fact, Poland has opened the submission window for artists and songs today!

The submission window opened on the 20th of September 2021 and will end on November 20, 2021, at 22.00.

Here are the main regulations

  1. Soloists and music groups (up to 6 people) are welcome to apply
  2. The chosen Polish artist will be revealed on the Sunday, the 2nd of January 2022.
  3. Artists must be at least 16 years of age before May 1.
  4. All submitted songs shouldn’t have been published before.
  5. Each song should be no longer than 3 minutes.
  6. There’s no language limitation.
  7. It is recommended that the Performers entered into the Competition take part in writing the text and composing the song.
  8. Applications should be sent by e-mail to the following address:
  9. TVP will appoint a Competition Committee composed of 5 people, including the Chairman.
  10. The selection will be determined by 2 stages.
  11. Each committee member will have the right to choose 3 songs out of the submitted songs.
  12. Each committee member has the right to add another singer that hasn’t directly qualified for the second stage.
  13. In the second stage, 3-15 artists will compete on the right to represent the country at Eurovision 2022.
  14. Each committee member will rank each one of the shortlisted songs in the range of 1-10.
  15. The song with the highest total score will be the Polish entry for Eurovision 2022.
  16. In the case of the tie, the deciding vote belongs to the Chairman of the Competition Committee.
  17. Therefore, the Polish act for Eurovision 2022 will be determined solely by a professional jury, and not by the audience.
  18. TVP saves itself the right to cancel the selection in any time.

In a special press conference, Sammarines broadcaster SMRTV revealed the plans of the tiny country for Eurovision 2022:

This year, San Marino will hold a national selection named “Una voce per San Marino“.

The new national selection will have 2 different paths. One for new artists and one for established artists.

New Artists Path

  1. New artists can submit their participation from the 26th of September 2021 until the 8th of January 2022
  2. a special committee will choose several applicants to qualify for the semi-finals.
  3. In the months of January – February, the Sammarinese broadcaster will host the semi-finals of the “New Artists” category.
  4. Top 9 new artists in the “New Artists” category will get a spot in the grand final of the national selection.
  5. There’s no language on nationality restrictions regarding this category.
  6. Candidates will have to go through 2 days music camp and private auditions.
  7. The grand final of the “Newcomers” category will be held on the 16th of February 2022.
  8. Registration Fee – 30$ for those who will apply until the 30th of November 2021, 50$ for those who will register later.

Established Artists Path

  1. The Sammarinese broadcaster will invite 9 established artists to take part in the selection
  2. At the moment, it seems like there’s no country restriction regarding the established artists category
  3. The 9 finalists of the established category will be revealed on the 10th of February 2022

One artist that might get a proposal to participate as an established one is Valentina (who has already represented the country in 2012 – 2014 and 2017):

Una voce per San Marino” – The Grand Final

  1. The Sammarines Television will hold a grand final show of the selection on Saturday, the 19th of February 2022.
  2. The grand final will take place at Teatro Titano
  3. 18 artists will take part in the final: 9 established artists alongside 9 new artists.
  4. Artists will perform their intended songs for Eurovision 2022
  5. Jury panel of 8 members will rank the performances and determine who will represent San Marino at Eurovision 2022!

The last time San Marino held a national selection was in 2018 with the “1 in 360” competition

Eurovision Song Contest

According to Swedish news website Aftonbladet, we have a list of 34 potential artists that will be involved at the “Melodifestivalen 2022“. Some of them will participate as singers, some of them will be song writers. Many of them, have already participated in the “Melodifestivalen” before:

Swedish broadcaster SVT has closed its song and artist submissions for Melodifestivalen 2022.
2,530 songs were submitted for the national festival. Only 28 songs will compete in Melodifestivalen 2022,14 songs will be chosen directly from the submissions process by a selected jury and 14 songs by artists or songwriters that have been invited to compete or songs that SVT has chosen from the songs that were sent in.
