As the submission window closed on the 7th of December 2021, Latvian broadcaster LTV is sharing with us some information about “Supernova 2022” – the Latvian selection for Eurovision 2022!
First of all, Latvia has broken a record regarding the number of submissions for the national selection:
A total of 130 songs have been submitted this year. This is the highest number of submissions for Latvia.
Another interesting thing is that some Latvian artists who have already represented the country at Eurovision will try their luck again.
Nevertheless, the submitted songs came from a variety of genres this year: electronic music, pop, folk, rock, and more.
Agnese Strause-Kubliņa, the head of LTV‘s Children’s, Youth and Entertainment Program reacted:
“In terms of genre, this is definitely the richest year of” Supernova “! Songs in the style of pop, folk music, electronic music, and even heavy rock have been submitted to the competition. Among the applicants are also artists who have already represented Latvia at the Eurovision Song Contest”
The professional jury panel will reduce the list of submitted songs.
They will judge the songs by several parameters: originality, arrangement, message, compliance with modern market trends, song potential, singers vocal abilities, personalities, and past achievements in the industry, as well as the potential for future achievements
The jury will end up ranking the songs until the end of December 2021.
The selected songs will be published in January 2022.
“Supernova 2022” will air in February 2022. The number of shows, as well as the accurate format, will be revealed later on.
“Supernova” was used as a mechanism for Latvia to select its Eurovision entry in the years 2015 – 2020.
In 2020, the singer Samanta Tina won the national selection and should have represented the country at Eurovision 2020 with the “Still Breathing“.
However, Eurovision 2020 was canceled due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Therefore, LTV has internally selected Samanta Tina to represent the country at Eurovision 2021.
She performed the song “The Moon Is Rising“. Unfortunately, she failed to qualify for the final:
The last time Latvia qualified for the final was at Eurovision 2016.
Will they manage to qualify for the final at Eurovision 2022?
