Welcome to our new series of posts!
The moment of truth has come, and all of the 40 competing songs of Eurovision 2022 have been revealed.
Therefore, we are ready for an extended review of them and of course ranking the songs.
Each post in the series will focus on 5-6 songs.
The 2nd post in the series will be focusing on 5 countries that will participate in the first semi-final:
Armenia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, and Ukraine.
Chapter 1 (Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Portugal, Slovenia) is available here

Artist: Rosa Linn

Rosa Linn (real name: Rosa Kostandyan) is a 21 year old singer-songwriter and producer.
She was born and raised in the Armenian city Vanadzor.
Her music genre can be described as indie pop with the wide influences of the 1990 music.
She was signed to the label Nvak Collective, led by the American Armanian musician Tamar Kaprelian (who competed in the national selection in 2018, and also represented Armenia as part of a group at Eurovision 2015).
Selection Process: Armenia has decided to select an artist and a song internally this year.
The final 2 artists were Rosa Linn and Saro
Rosa Linn will perform the song “Snap“:
Allocation in Semi-Final: Armenia will perform in the second half of semi-final 1.
Musical review: It’s a country pop mid-tempo ballad.
The song starts with acoustic guitar playing and light percussion elements.
Rosa opens the singing part with a gentle and soft voice. The rate is quite slow, and the production is basic. The chorus suggests more of a flavor of a hymn. She is accompanied by some backing vocalists. The melody is still based on guitar playing, but this time it is slightly faster. Rosa sings the first half of it effortlessly, while towards the end we get a higher pitch of voice.
The second verse is more energetic, as it is built on the same rhythm as in the chorus.
The main element is the guitar playing. At this time, she is more “free” with her voice. The chorus comes again, and it sounds the same as the previous one.
The bridge part begins with an unplugged singer, and the focus is on her voice.
Then again, we get the chorus that this time starts with no melody until it appears again.
towards the end, we hear Rosa present some beautiful moments with her voice, while the backing vocalists sing the main part.
First of all, I want to mention that for me, the verses are stronger than the chorus.
The chorus sounds a bit flat or even childish.
It is a radio-friendly song, but I don’t think it will have an impact on the contest.
Lyrics
It’s 4 am
I can’t turn my head off
Wishin’ these memories would fade
They never do
Turns out people lie
They say, “Just snap your fingers.”
As if it was really that easy for me to get over you
I just need time
Snapping one, two
Where are you?
You’re still in my heart
Snapping three, four
Don’t need you here anymore
Get out of my heart
‘Cause I might snap
I’m writing a song
Said, “This is the last one”
How many last songs are left?
I’m losing count
Since June twenty-second
My heart’s been on fire
I was spending my nights in the rain
Tryna put it out
So I’m snapping one, two
Where are you?
You’re still in my heart
Snapping three, four
Don’t need you here anymore
Get out of my heart
‘Cause I might snap
Oh-oh-oh-ooh
‘Cause I might snap
Oh-oh-oh-ooh
And if one more person says, “You should get over it”
Oh, I might stop talking to people before I snap, snap, snap
Oh, I might stop talking to people before I snap
Snapping one, two
Where are you? (Where are you?)
You’re still in my heart (Still in my heart)
Snapping three, four
Don’t need you here anymore (Need you here anymore)
Get out of my heart
‘Cause I might snap[Post-Chorus]
Oh-oh-oh-ooh (Snap)
‘Cause I might snap
Oh-oh-oh-ooh (Snap)
Get out of my heart
Oh-oh-oh-ooh
‘Cause I might snap
Oh-oh-oh-ooh (Get out of my heart, get out of my)
‘Cause I might snap
Poetry Analysis: This is a personal song that can be explained in multiple ways.
The spokesperson starts by revealing that something bothers her while sleeping. She has been trying to deny it, but it is still in her memory. She hints that someone lied to her, and therefore she has problems trusting people. Her environment tells her she will easily forget about this. However, she needs more time to get over him.
She used the metaphor of snapping as a quick action that characterizes our generation.
She asks ironically where is him, and right after answers that he is still in her heart.
She is trying to convince herself to get him out of her heart, but it isn’t easy.
Thereafter, we realize how strong the memory is about him for her. She indicated the date when they separated or first met. She has promised herself to dedicate the last song to him, but it seems that she still keeps on writing about him. The contrast between her burning heart and the rain outside, demonstrated the volume of her emotions.
Towards the end, she understands that it is all about self rate. In other words, a better idea can be trying to overcome the broken heart, before telling it to people who won’t understand the difficulty of getting over someone.
Initial Personal Ranking: 31st overall, 12th in semi-final 1
The impact of the allocation in semi-final 1: Among the countries that usually vote for Armenia, we can find the following countries in the list of countries that vote in semi-final 1:
France, Bulgaria, Greece, and The Netherlands.
Betting Odds: The song leaked around the 12st of March 2022. Armenia was in 19 – 20 place in this time. A day after, the song went up to the 17th place. Afterwards, the song spent a few days in 20th place. On the day the clip was released, Armenia was 16th with the bookies.
Since then, Armenia has been stable in 19 – 20 place.
Early Prediction: I can see it qualifying or failing to qualify almost at the same time. My problem is that the song plays too safely. It is a song that can easily be forgotten in the voting, just because others will stand out more. I’m quite ambivalent about this one.
If it qualifies, I can see it ending in 18 – 26 places, otherwise it won’t qualify.

Artist: Citi Zēni (In English: Other Boys)

Citi Zēni is a pop-hip-hop, Latvian band.
The band consists of 6 members:
- Jānis Pētersons – vocals
- Roberts Memmēns – bass, vocals
- Dagnis Roziņš – vocals, saxophone
- Krišjānis Ozols – guitar
- Reinis Višķeris – keyboards
- Toms Kagainis – drums
The band was formed in March 2020 at a songwriting camp.
In 2021, they released their debut album “Suņi Iziet Ielās” (Eng: Dogs take to the streets).
Selection Process: Latvia has chosen an artist and a song via the “Supernova 2022”.
17 artists took part in the selection, and 11 of them qualified for the final.
With a joint decision of jury vote and public vote, Citi Zēni won the first place.
They will perform the song “Eat your Salad“;
Allocation in Semi-Final: Latvia will perform in the first half of semi-final 1.
Musical review: This is an entertaining glam cabaret rap pop song.
The song starts with a short instrumental composed of wind instruments.
The melody is stopped in order to emphasize the first row in the song.
The first verse is performed in fast singing, which limits in rap.
In the first verse, we can hear guitar playing as well.
The pre-chorus is festive and memorable, it is performed by several band members.
The chorus is performed in the form of “question and answer”. One line is performed by the lead singer, while the following is sung as “choir singing” by the others.
The second verse has a different melody, and it shows a process that you’re going through.
The chorus arrives again and the composition of all wind instruments is back again, this time with a solo section of trumpets. The song ends with 2 occurneces of the chorus until it slowly decays.
I will be honest, it isn’t my cup of tea, but at least it is original. I appreciate the diversity the song suggests by its melody. The lyrics might be censored a little bit at Eurovision, but will the message still be delivered?
Lyrics
Instead of meat, I eat veggies and pussy
I like them both fresh, like them both juicy
I ride my bicycle to work instead of a car

Poetry Analysis: This song is about a new man, who can still be manly and strong, even if he is vegan. To mark his masculinity, the word “pussy” is included. In the first verse, the spokesperson states that he doesn’t eat meat anymore, but vegetables. It is important for him to save the planet, therefore there are some daily activities he does differently:riding on bicycle instead of using a car, using glass jars instead of plastic bags, using reusable bags and more. He describes his life as enjoyable and happier, following these choices.
The spokesperson described the concerning situation of the planet, where icebergs are melting. He gives the universe the metaphoric name of Titanic, which hints about the disaster we may go through if we don’t take actions on time. He asked us to see all the signs around us. To begin with, he recommends taking a baby step, by thinking about him anytime when we eat veggies. In other words, he tries to penetrate our subconscious with this message.
He mentions that being green isn’t only an important thing, but also a hot trend that’s recommended to follow.
Thereafter, he invites us to sort the trash, while another sexual metaphor pops up – “peach” as a shaking butt. The same line continues, as he recommends us to forget about hot dogs, since he has s bigger sausage.
Initial Personal Ranking: 33rd overall, 13th is semi-final 1.
The impact of the allocation in semi-final 1: Among the countries that usually vote for Latvia, we can find the following countries in the list of countries that vote in semi-final 1:
Lithuania and Norway.
Betting Odds: Latvia has chosen Citi Zēni to represent the country at Eurovision 2022 on the 12th of February 2022. Between the 12th of February 2022 and the 3rd of March 2022, Latvia was in place 22 – 24 on the table. Thereafter, it was moved (almost on a daily basis) to a range of 23 – 28 places, but most of the on 25th place. Recently, the song in 27th or 28th with the bookies.
Early Prediction: When it comes to Latvia this year, I think it will all depend on the gap between jury voting and public voting. I think it can be between the public qualifiers and not among the jury qualifiers. Having a gap that’s too high, Latvia will end up outside the final.
Having sufficient support from the public will qualify.
However, it doesn’t look like the best draw for Latvia, that has only Lithuania by itside.

Artist: Monika Liu

Monika Liubinaitė (better known as Monika Liu) is a 34 year old singer-songwriter.
She has started learning to play the piano at the age of 5. She discovered her passion for singing at the age of 10.
In 2004, she won the singing sompetition “Dainų dainelė“.
Monika has achieved great academic experience in the field of music: she studied jazz music and vocal studies at Klaipėda University (in Lithuania), and also studied at Berklee College of Music, Boston, USA. Thereafter, she spent some time in London, where she collaborates with local musicians. So far, the singer has released 3 studio albums, the latter of them in 2020.
Selection Process: Lithuania has chosen an artist and a song via their national selection “Pabandom is naujo 2022“. 34 artists competed in the 6 shows of the selection.
Monika Liu was announced as the winner, after she was ranked first by the jury and the public.
Monika Liu will perform the song “Sentimentai“
Allocation in Semi-Final: Lithuania will perform in the first half of semi-final 1.
Musical review: It’s a cabaret pop song with foundations from 1950s and 1960 music.
The song starts with a fast beat drum sound that represents the sound of someone knocking on a door, like suggested in the lyrics. She uses sensual low singing and moves surprisingly between low and high notes. Her interpretation is very theatritical and it also can be seen by her moves. Pre-chorus includes a non-uniform beat. The chorus goes in a different direction, we can hear plenty of sound effects, one of them is a short-amplitude dance beat as well as ringing bell sound. The chorus ends with some long notes that are built on voice vibrations. She sings a particular part with elements of opera singing. Then we get a second verse which is more rhythmic. This time the melody is based on the beat from the beginning, as well as bass, violin and keyboards. She is accompanied by backing vocalists. The chorus arrives and again we can hear the same beats from previously. This time it sounds more like a disco song. She ends the song with some vocal improvisations.
Honestly, I just don’t get the magic in it. Yes, she has an impressive stage presence. She stays faithful to her own identity and personality during the song. But at the same time I must confess, the song is dated and even boring in some parts. It is a matter of taste, but I can’t see it doing well at Eurovision. I appreciate the use of the Lithuanian language here.
Lyrics [Translation from Lithuanian to English, by LyricsTranslate]
Knock knock knock
At night, it is knocking at my heart
Full of longing
Accompanied by memories
A ghostYou, it’s you, it’s you
A face seen long ago
Why are you laughing like a clown
With my shining eyes?Moments are spinning in a circle in my head,
They’re running where you are
A million roses, like sentiments
are drowning in the sea of cloudsAh…
Restless sea is rustling
I have tears in my eyes
That’s it – he’s never gonna come back
He arrived as a black foamI remember how I’m standing in the middle of dunes of Nida
and waiving to a seagull
so far, far away…Moments are spinning in a circle in my head
They’re running where you are
A million roses, like sentiments
are drowning in the sea of cloudsMoments are spinning in a circle in my head
They’re running where you are
A million roses, like sentiments
are drowning in the sea of clouds
Poetry Analysis: The song tells the story of a woman who reminisces about memories of a lover she had.
Her story begins with an imaginary knocking on the door she hears. She imagines that this is her lover who knocks on her door. She tells us she is excited about his arrival, and her heartbeat can be a piece of evidence. She is longing for her lover, but it seems he won’t come back, as she describes him as a ghost. Many years after they haven’t met, she sees him as a laughing clown. It can tell us how he makes her happy, but at the same time to hint at the detachedness of the situation.
She has a million beautiful memories of him, but now she is just wondering where he is.
All these memories are drawn now, as he is far away.
In the third verse, she is ready to reveal what happened. The sea is restless and this is a sign that something tremendous gonna happen. And indeed, she cries. The lyrics are connected to the Lithuanian fairytale ”Eglė žalčių karalienė” (Egle the Queen of Grass-snakes). In this fairytale, the sea demonstrates the status of her lover, who the depths of the sea. White foam means he is alive, black foam will symbolize his death. Unfortunately, the sea is full of black foam, which is aligned with the hints before – her lover is dead and will never comeback.
These memories left her restless, as she remembers their moments together. She used to wave to the seagulls, near the sea. However, she decides to focus on the bright side, all the romantic moments they have had together.
Initial Personal Ranking: 37th overall, 16th in semi-final 1
The impact of the allocation in semi-final 1: Among the countries that usually vote for Lithuania, we can find the following countries in the list of countries that vote in semi-final 1:
Latvia, Norway, Ukraine and Italy.
Betting Odds: Lithuania has chosen Monika Liu to represent the country on the 12th of February 2022. In the first 2 weeks on the table (after the song was chosen), Lithuania was 25 – 29 with the bookies. Between the 1st of March and 9th of March, Lithuania decreased and was in the range of 33 – 36 places. The following days were spent in the 28, 30, 35, 34, 31 places.
Since the 15th of March, Lithuania has moved in a range of 31 – 34 places.
Early Prediction: I tend to say that Lithuania will probably end its journey in the semi-final. I don’t think the song is bad, but it is definitely not for everyone. I can see it doing better with older viewers or with the jury. Monika has a great stage presence, but I don’t think it can succeed in Eurovision, but more with the local market.
Is there a chance it will qualify? Yes, but most likely not.

Artist: Zdob și Zdub and Frații Advahov

Zdob şi Zdub aren’t strangers to Eurovision. They represented Moldova on 2 occasions. In 2005. with the song “Boonika Bate Toba” (6th place) and in 2011 with the song “So Lucky” (12th place).
The group was formed back in 1994 and has a record of taking part in music festivals and more.
The folk-punk band has released 10 albums to date.
They will be joined by Fraţii Advaho (Advaho brothers). The siblings are very popular in Moldova with their folk music.
Selection Process: Moldova planned to hold a national selection woth televised show, however, due to the pandemic situation, they were decided by national jury voting. 28 songs qualified for the auditions. The chosen act is Zdob și Zdub and Frații Advahov.
They will perform the song “Trenulețul” (Eng: litttle train):
Revamped version:
Allocation in Semi-Final: Moldova was drawn to perform in the first half of smei-final 1.
Musical Review: It is an ethnic folk-pop song. The song starts with guitars and drums playing which gives it a few rock vibes. Right after, we get the introduction where the accordion is added. The first verse is based on violin, accordion and guitar playing. The singing is fast and in some sense can be defined as rap. In the chorus, the lead singer recites in English. Thereafter, comes the second verse where we can hear the guitar playing as the main element. He gets the support of backing vocalists. The chorus is performed is half speaking – half rap. This time, we get a longer instrumental part that’s stopped sometimes for yelling by the lead singer. This structure repeats all over again. Until we arrive at the bridge, that starts with electric guitar solo playing.
I have some difficulties with this song. First of all, it is almost impossible to find any singing parts in this song. The lead singer is sometimes aggressive with his performance. I can’t see why yelling and shouting should guide us in a song that should make the listeners happy. In addition, the song is repetitive. It has only one verse and one chorus that keeps on going until the song ends.
When the worst part is the instrumental part, you know that there’s a severe problem here.
Finally, the song has 2 almost opposite problems: it is dated and also childish.
Let me say it in this way: if this is the train, I’d probably choose to arrive by bus.
Lyrics
Oh, Advahov!
Chisinau here!
Gigi, how long has passed!
Go tell aunt Lucreția that I’m bringing her what she asked for and
the carpet that she likes.
Tomorrow morning be at the train station and meet me!)Departing!
Chisinau – Bucharest.
Oh-ohThe train’s going, just like flying
From one country to another
It is going but confused:
What’s the country? Are they fused?
Is it old or is it new?
Seems like one, but also two
Both together and apart
Are there two? Or just one part?Hey ho, Let’s go!
Folklore and Rock’n’roll.
The train’s route is East to West
Chisinau – Bucharest.Oh-oh…
Both in that land and in this
We dance hora – it’s a bliss
And in each country within
Magic’s made with violin
When the train gets to a stand
Feels like almost the same land
Feels like went without a change
Home-to-home. What an exchange!Hey ho, Let’s go!
Folklore and Rock’n’roll.
The train’s route is East to West
Chisinau – Bucharest.Hey ho, Let’s go!
Folklore and Rock’n’roll.
The train’s route is East to West
Chisinau – Bucharest.
Hey ho, Let’s go!
Folklore and Rock’n’roll.
The train’s route is East to West
Chisinau – Bucharest.Chisinau – Bucharest.
Going quick…
( – Good evening! Having a concert here? Fun! Where we going?
-Bucharest!
Carrying any cigarettes?
No!
And what if I find any?
Gonna share with you then!
What? Undo the carpet!)Chisinau – Bucharest
Going quickly, going good
Train of our nationhood
But it cannot comprehend
What’s the country? Where’s the end?
Is it old or is it new?
Seems like one, but also two
Both together and apart
Are there two? Or just one part?Hey ho, Let’s go!
Folklore and Rock’n’roll.
The train’s route is East to West
Chisinau – Bucharest.Hey ho, Let’s go!

The train’s route is East to West
Chisinau – Bucharest.
Hey ho, Let’s go!
Folklore and Rock’n’roll.
The train’s route is East to West
Chisinau – Bucharest.( How was the train, bro?
Fun! What times we’re living in, bro! Spend our whole lives glued to phones and see each other once in 100 years. While life passes by… I brought you a cognac though, and a disc “Frații Advahov and Zdob și Zdub”…
What about the carpet?
Turn back to the station, I left the carpet in the train!)
Poetry Analysis: The song describes the exciting meeting between 2 friends. One of them lives in Chisinau, and the other in Bucharest. The journey of one of them is done by the special train from Chisinau to Bucharest. The emphasis in the song is that the train crosses the border between 2 countries, but they still have a lot in common.
Initial Personal Ranking: 40th overall, 17th in semi-final 1
The impact of the allocation in semi-final 1: Among the countries that usually vote for Moldova, we can find the following countries in the list of countries that vote in semi-final 1:
Portugal, Ukraine, Italy, and Greece.
Betting Odds: Moldova has chosen the group to represent the country on the 29th of January 2022. Until the 16th of February, the bookies weren’t excited about this entry, putting it in 28 – 36 places on the table. Thereafter, it spent around a week in the 36 – 38 places.
Until the 10th of March 2022, the country was 33rd and 34th in the table.
Since then, Mldova has moved into a range of 25 -29 places.
Early Prediction: The song isn’t the one that I would like to put in my playlist, but it doesn’t mean the same is valid for the voters.
I think it can do quite well with the voters, especially from the Balkans or eastern countries, like: Greece, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Armenia, Croatia and more.
Therefore, I think it might be enough for qualifiying. It will probably end in the middle of the table in the final.

Artist: Kalush Orchestra

Kalush band was formed in 2019. The band is named after the hometown of one of the band members. Their first video clip was released this year.
In November 2019, Kalush signed a recording contract with the American hip-hop label Def Jam Recordings.
During 2021, they released 2 studio albums. In 2021, they announced the expansion of the project as Kalush Orchestra. The group focuses on rap with folk motifs and Ukarinian traditional music.
The current line-up includes: Oleh Psiuk (founder, rapper), Ihor Didenchuk (multi – instrumentalist), Tymofii Muzychuk (multi – instrumentalist), Kilimmen (DJ), Johnny Dyvnyi (backing vocals), and Vitalii Duzhyk (multi – instrumentalist).
Selection Process: Ukraine has chosen its artist and song for Eurovision via “Vidbir 2022“.
8 artists qualified for the televised show. The original winner was Alina Pash.
However, due to disagreements between the singer and the broadcaster, it has been decided that she won’t participate at Eurovision.
The band Kalush Orchestra, that ended in second place, are set to represent the country at Eurovision 2022.
Allocation in Semi-Final: Ukraine was allocated to perform in the first half of semi-final 1
Musical Review: This is an Ethnic folk rap song. The song starts with an instrumental part composed by keyboards. In the introduction, we can hear one of the vocalists singing with a powerful white singing, while being accompanied by others. The first verse is upbeat and performed in a fast rap singing. The melody is based on a fast beat with string elements. The chorus is emotional and performed by the vocalist from the introduction. It starts as a lullaby and slowly becomes a piece from an ethnic ballad. After the chorus, we get an instrumental part that’s composed of flute playing. Once again, we have a verse of rap singing, this time even with more “swag”.
The next chorus is longer. We can hear the string elements. However, this time it is followed by another acoustic version of the chorus.
The song ends with the flute playing mixed with a soft beat.
It is a catchy song that you can’t ignore. I loved the choice of multiple instruments. I must say, that for me the chorus and the instrumental part are stronger than the verses.
Sometimes the rap part sounds too repetitive and can be a little bit inaccessible for people who don’t like rap. There’s no doubt that one of the advantages of their performance is their stage presence and chemistry as a group.
Lyrics
Stefania, mum mum Stefania
The field blooms, but she is turning grey
Sing me a lullaby mum
I want to hear your native words. She rocked me; gave me rhythm and probably the power of will; did not take, but she gave
Probably knew even more and from Solomon
I will always walk to you on broken roads
She will not awaken, won’t wake, me in strong storms
She would take two fig signs from grandma, as if they were bullets
She knew me very well; she was not deceived, like she was very tired; she rocked me in time
Lyuli lyuli lyuli…Stefania, mum, mum Stefania
The field blooms, but she is turning gray
Sing me a lullaby mum
I want to hear your native words.I’m not in diapers but ma but ma, enough, like if I did not grow up to grow to pay for things
I’m not a small child, she still loses her temper, I walked, “like the slag would hit you” [Ukrainian curse]
You are all young oh mother at the peak, if I do not value guardianship at the peak of glory I’m in the dead end
Kill that peak, I would sing with my love
Lyuli lyuli lyuli…Stefania, mum, mum Stefania
The field blooms, but she is turning gray
Sing me a lullaby mum
I want to hear your native words.Stefania, mum, mum Stefania
The field blooms, but she is turning gray26
Sing me a lullaby mum
I want to hear your native words.
Poetry Analysis: It is a love song that a son dedicates to his mother.
He describes how nature can celebrate its own existence (the field is blooming), but as days go by, his mother is getting old (her hair is turning gray).
He describes her character as the main one to design his own personality. From the moment she rocked him in the baby seat, and thereafter when she insisted on giving without taking.
He said she was responsible for his love of the beat.
Thereafter, he mentions that sometimes she still considers him a little boy. It can annoy him, but at the same time he knows that it comes from good intentions.
Initial Personal Ranking: 25th overall, 10th in semi-final 1
The impact of the allocation in semi-final 1: Among the countries that usually vote for Ukraine, we can find the following countries in the list of countries that vote in semi-final 1:
Armenia and Moldova.
Betting Odds: Kalush Orchestra was declared as Ukrainian representatives on the 22nd of February 2022. On this day, Ukraine was 7th in the odds. Thereafter, the country became stronger every single day. Sine the 26 of February, Ukraine has been stable in the first place!
Early Prediction: Ukraine‘s place in the final is certain. I believe Ukraine will end in the top5 in semi-final 1, and in top 10 overall in the grand final.
Is it possible that Ukraine will win the whole contest? Yes, but I don’t think the jury will put it high enough to win.
In the next chapter, we will discuss more participants of semi-final 1.
