Musical Review

  • It is a country folk song, with wide influences of the 1960’s music.
  • The song starts with the sound of invoice mail. In the background, we can hear drum beats, guitar playing and sampled studio effects.
  • The song continues with the chorus, which they sing together. The melody is based on guitar riffs and drum beats. The majority of the focus is on the vocal harmonies they suggest.
  • The first verse is performed by one of them in the rap genre. The guitar is the main element in the melody. Rap singing sounds like a piece of 1990’s music.
  • Electric guitar and bass lead us to the following part of the song. They sing the bridge together. It sounds more like the early 2000 sofr rock songs.
  • Thereafter, they move on to sing in a more folky style, although the melody doesn’t change a lot.
  • Their singing becomes more powerful, until they reach the C part which is composed of drum beats and long swirl notes.
  • The song ends in a cyclic way. One of them sings the chorus in an acoustic production.
  • Overall, it is a decent singer-songwriter song. The general style reminded me a lot of classical music, like the one of The Beatles.
  • I am happy to see Azerbaijan sending a song that was composed, written and produced in Azerbaijan.
  • However, the song doesn’t progress in an interesting way and it remains quite linear.
  • I am afraid it won’t be enough in order to impress the public.

Lyrics

Tell me more about me, about you, about us
tell me you love me baby
More than I trust
And I just want to know
How do you feel about us?
now?

I don’t know you found someone or someone is me
I ran away from fate and gave up my dream
I carry all the pain and sorrow that is in vain
All the games you think I play are my ways of staying sane
I’m shouting it from the heels up
I have nothing but tears to cry
If I ever learn to feel the way I did again
I’m gonna die from the feelings I’ve been putting down for years, baby

Tell me more about me, about you, about us
tell me you love me baby
More than I trust
And I just want to know
How do you feel about us?
now?

I want to buy land a thousand kilometers away
Commenting that I didn’t even choose her
I think it’s all because of people treating you like a fool
And makes you wonder why
But now is the time when I walk the streets
And the places we would go
We thought we’d be back pretty soon, but we never did
It’s between you and me, getting more and more

let me tell you one thing baby
It might change all your thoughts about us
You want me to worry again too
So let me tell you if you’re ready
Hear me out, baby: let’s go crazy
I have something you are looking for
And this is love
Love
Love

Tell me more about me, about you, about us
tell me you love me baby
More than I trust
And I just want to know
How do you feel about us?
now?

Poetry Analysis

The song deals with the ups and downs of relationships.
The opening is a voicemail message which adds a personal flavour to the song.
The spokesperson talks about a past relationship, and tries to wonder whether it is possible to come back.
Tell me more about me, you, us” marks a longing for clarity and closeness.
The spokesperson is uncertain and insecure about the future (“More than I trust”).
The spokesperson is still in pain about the past. He can’t deal with the sorrow.
I ran away from fate and gave up my dream” – He strongly believes in this relationship, however for some reason, he didn’t take the right action.
For others it seemed like he wanted to play games, but it was his way of dealing with the situation.
The spokesperson floats with emotion of misopurtinuty.
If I ever learn to feel the way I did again/ I’m gonna die from the feelings I’ve been putting down for years.
In the second verse, he suggests moving on to a new city as a solution, indicating that maybe the distance will be the best remedy.
They thought about returning, but it doesn’t seem possible. He also suggests that some people may prevent their comeback.
The song ends with a positive message, indicating love as the solution and healing their wounds.

Betting Odds

On the 13th of March 2023, Azerbaijan released its song for Eurovision 2023
On this day, Azerbaijan was 21st in the odds, thereafter it was in 22-24 place for 7 days.
Thereafter, Azerbaijan was 28th in the odds for 3 days.
Ever since then, the country has been 30th with the bookies.

Early Prediction

Azerbaijan has struggled with Eurovision in recent years. Last year, they finished semi-final 2 with 0 points from the public.
This year, they brought a song that might be more appealing to the jury. On top of this, let’s add that semi-final 1 is the strongest one. That’s why I can’t see Azerbaijan qualifying.
Prediction: Not Qualifying

Musical Review

It is a boy band pop song.
The song has the typical elements of stadium hymn songs.
The songs starts with a short instrumental part, composed of keyboards playing.
The lead singer opens the song with accurate singing. The melody is quite simple, and relies on guitar stringing as well. In the first verse, the emphasis is on the lead singer’s voice.
It feels like the melody has been put on lower volume, and let me say on a lower priority as well.
In the chorus, we can hear the lead singer’s more challenging pitch which makes his voice even more special. He starts singing the chorus alone, but towards the peak point, we can some of the other members as backing vocalists. The melody of the chorus is based on the piano playing, but later on we can hear string elements, as well as electric guitar playing.
The chorus is also the point where the song steps one step towards the pop-rock world.
The second verse has a higher tempo. The singing is a bit faster, and the melody is based on combination of electric guitar and bass guitar stringing, with the basis of the keyboards playing. The lead’s singer voice is more raspy.
Then again, we get the chorus which starts with a very simple production, and little by little gain its energy back. The structure of the chorus is a bit different this time, the guitars play a bigger role, and we can hear more of the other band members singing.
The lyrics deliver some cliches, like “We are one” or “We might be different, we might be unique”.
The song sounds like one of the tracks of a successful boyband from the beginning of the 2000’s.
I can’t say it isn’t pleasant, but something here feels to me “too by the book”.

Lyrics

We take our first breath
And then we exhale
Though we give it all we got
Until we fail
We get back up again
We take a look around
Oh, life can be a long road
But at least we’re not alone

We might be different, we might be unique
You might be a leader, I might be a freak
And we might be different
But, under the falling sun

Tonight, we are one
And we are one
When we rise, we rise like the sun
When we go down, we go down, we go down, we go down

We take our first step
And then we fall
But, still, we keep on going
And climbing every wall
We keep on fighting
And turning every stone
And life could be a long road
At least we’re not alone

We might be different, we might be unique
You might be a leader, I might be a freak
And we might be different
But, under the falling sun

Tonight, we are one
And we are one
When we rise, we rise like the sun
When we go down, we go down, we go down

We are one (We might be different, we might be unique)
And we are one (You might be a leader, I might be a freak)
We are one (And we might be different but, under the falling sun)
Tonight, we are one (We might be different, we might be unique)
And we are one (You might be a leader, I might be a freak)
When we rise, we rise like the sun
When we go down, we go down, we go down, we go-
We are one

Poetry Analysis

  • The song talks about the power in unity, alongside how to deal with failures in life.
  • We take our first breath/ and then we exhale” – We have to defend ourselves from the moment we are born.
  • Oh, life can be a long road/ But at least we’re not alone” – Life isn’t easy, but having others on our sides will relieve the burden. We can see life as a row of stories, failures and getting up.
  • We might be different, we might be unique/ But, under the falling sun Tonight, we are one” – No matter who we are, we all will face the same difficulties. We can look different, have different opinions and so on. However, we are similar at the end of the day.
  • We take our first step/ And then we fall/ But, still, we keep on going/ And climbing every wall” – Failures (falling) can be found in every single day of life. However, we keep on going, and we return stronger and more determined.

Initial Personal Ranking

12th is semi-final 1, 29th place overall.

The impact of the allocation in semi-final 1

Among the countries that usually vote for Ireland, 4 countries will vote in semi-final 1: Sweden, Switzerland, Czecia, and Norway

Betting Odds

On the 3rd of February 2023, Wild Youth won the national selection.
On that night, Ireland was 14th with the bookies, and then 15th.
Afterwards, Ireland have been in 18-20 place for 4 days.
Ireland has been in 21-24 place for 10 days, 20th place for one day, and then 21-24 place for 5 days.
Thereafter, Ireland was 20th with the bookies for 2 days.
Ever since then, Ireland have been in 23-25 place in the table.

Early Prediction

Ireland (once again as in 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022) was allocated in the strongest semi-final.
They aren’t the only band in semi-final 1 (and specifically in the first half).
They will have to compete against Malta, Croatia, and Latvia.
I believe the song can get some support from the public, but I am not sure it will be enough in this semi-final.
Prediction: Not Qualifying for the final

Noa Korel – Unicorn

Noa Kirel is a 21 year-old Israeli singer and actress.

Thereafter, each member of the committee mentioned his top 2 favorites out of these 78 artists.
Eventually, they ranted the 20 artists by priority.
And the chosen artist in the famous pop singer Noa Kirel.

Allocation in Semi-Final

Israel was allocated to perform in the second half of semi-final 1 at Eurovision 2023.
Israel is set to perform in 9th position, after Switzerland and before Moldova.

Musical Review

  • It is a pop song.
  • The song starts with an impressive orchestral string playing that’s used as an instrumental introduction.
  • The first verse is based on a sampled percussion and keyboards playing. Noa sings with a mid-high tone of voice and lengthens some of the syllables. Towards the end, we can hear the electric keyboards.
  • In the second verse, the melody is based on clap effect, as well as percussion instruments. Noa sings with the support of backing vocalists.
  • The chorus is powerful. The melody is based on keyboard playing that is fateren as the chorus progresses. Towards the end of the chorus, we can hear string elements playing.
  • The third verse is faster. The melody is based on an upbeat dance tempo. Noa sings it with a higher tone of voice. This part of the melody features some oriental string elements.
  • Thereafter, we get a short transition part – “It’s gonna be Phenomenon-phenomenal”. It is danceable, catchy and connects wisely the different parts of the songs.
  • The second chorus starts with a faster beat, but the basis of the melody is the same. We can hear some backing vocals as well. The classic string instruments are combined in the second half of the chorus.
  • We get an additional short transition part – “It’s gonna be Phenomenon-phenomenal”. This time it is more sassy and yet oriental.
  • The last half minute of the song is instrumental with some backing vocals. It is fast and danceable. This part features more electronic production. This part is intended to be a dance break.
  • A lot is going on in the song. From classic string elements to oriental pop and a dance break. It seems like a lot of thoughts were put into the staging potential of the song. Musically, it is good but not different from any successful pop song.
  • Putting it all together, we get one of the catchiest songs of the year. I am sure Noa will deliver and will impress in the live performance.

Translated Lyrics

Hey, you don’t like the way I’m talking
Hey, so you stand there keep on calling me names
No, I’m not your enemy so
If you’re gonna do it, don’t do it

Hey, do you want to check my DNA?
Older stories, time to go away
And believe in fairytales oh
If you’re gonna do it…

I’m gonna stand here like a unicorn
Out here on my own
I got the power of a unicorn
Don’t you ever learn?
That I won’t look back
I won’t look down
I’m going up
You better turn around
The power of a unicorn
The power of a unicorn

History caught in a loop
Don’t you want to change it?
You know that we can, you and me
Can write a new book
Don’t you want to change it now?

It’s gonna be
Phenomenon-phenomenal-phenomenal
Phenomenon – phenomenal
Feminine- feminine- feminine

I’m gonna stand here like a unicorn
Out here on my own
I got the power of a unicorn
Don’t you ever learn?
That I won’t look back
I won’t look down
I’m going up
You better turn around
The power of a unicorn
The power of a unicorn

It’s gonna be
Phenomenon-phenomenal-phenomenal
Phenomenon – phenomenal

I’m not like everybody else
In front of the rest of the world

It’s gonna be
Phenomenon-phenomenal-phenomenal
Phenomenon – phenomenal

You can call me queen

I’m not trying to impress

U wanna see me dance?
U wanna see me dance?
U wanna see me dance?!
Watch me!
U-ni-corn!
U-ni-corn!
U-ni-corn!
U-ni-corn!
I’m standing like a…

Poetry Analysis

  • The song can be translated into 2 different meanings. The first one is a woman-empowerment song, the second one is a song that tells the story of Israel in the world.
  • In this review I will focus on the second interpretation.
  • “You don’t like the way I’m talking” – The spokesperson recognizes herself as different from the others. She believes that this is one of the reasons that she is mocked by them (“you stand here keep on calling me names“).
  • She asks them not to do so, and it gives us the impression of what her interntions are – settle things together peachfully.
  • Do you wanna check my DNA“? – Israel is well known for its ancient history and heritage. This phrase aims to know the past, but still keeps on going for the future.
  • Older stories, time to go away/ And believe in fairytales” – There’s no need to keep on sticking to the past. It is time to release the history and old stories. It is also a call for a brighter mutual future, even if the history was harsh.
  • If you’re gonna do it…” – This phrase repeats several times in the song. It can be a hint for ignorance by others, as well as the danger of getting hurt by others.
  • “I’m gonna stand here like a unicorn/ Out here on my own/ I got the power of a unicorn
    Don’t you ever learn?”
    – The spokesperson isn’t going to depend on the other’s mercy. She (who represents Israel) has the power to stand on her own. She has the motivation to fight for her rights and defend her agenda. Unicorns are well known (in fairytales) for their strength, healing and eternal love. It is hinted that the others haven’t learned from the past: They have mocked her, ignored her, wished she will disappear, but after all she survived and became stronger.
  • She won’t look back or down, that means she will focus on self empowerment and won’t dig in the past.
  • History caught in a loop/ Don’t you want to change it?/ You know that we can, you and me/ Can write a new book/ Don’t you want to change it now” – We can spend a whole life thinking about the history. It is important to remember history, but we have to focus on what happened now and in the short term. Stucking on the same story is childish and even nonsense. The power will come from unity. Together we are stronger and can make a great future.
  • I’m not like everybody else/ In front of the rest of the world” – The spokesperson deals with her uniqueness and she is proud of it. While others are busy in stucking on the past, they even look similar. Every single day when they don’t go on, they just lose power and identity.
  • You wanna see me dance?” – Do you want to see her fighting on her own? You better watch, because you’ll never expect such defending.

Initial Personal Ranking

2nd overall in semi-final 1, 3rd overall.

The impact of the allocation in semi-final 1

Among the countries that usually vote for Israel, 6 countries will vote in semi-final 1: France, Azerbaijan, The Netherlands, Finalnd, Switzerland nad Portugal

Betting Odds

The song was released on the 8th of March 2023.

Then, the country spent 5 days in the 8-9 place in the table.
Since the 16th of March, Israel has moved in a range of 5-6 places in the table.

Early Prediction

The song stands out for its sharp production, contangius melody and most of all: the presence of Noa Kirel.
I believe Noa will do well with the public.
So it looks like Israel will qualify for the final.
Regarding the grand final, I predict Israel will end in the top 10, somewhere between 3-7.

Musical Review

It is an indie alternative song, with soft rock influences.
The song starts with a combination of percussion instruments, drums and keyboards.
The lead singer starts singing with a high and soft voice. The first verse also includes an electric guitar instrumental part that has some electronic production.
The chorus is catchy, and sounds great vocally. The fast beat is replaced by electric and bass guitar. This part is performed in a less higher tone of voice.
Immediately afterwards, we get the second chorus. The production isn’t electronic at this part, but relies on drum beat. This verse is slightly longer.
The chorus is emotional and includes some backing vocals.
The bridge is less melodical, but suggests a vocal peak that’s blown by an instrumental part of electric and bass guitar.
The last part of the song starts acoustically, with no production in the background, in the simplest way.
They deliver vocally and emotinally..

Lyrics

You said some words, didn’t hear you fell asleep
People were talking louder from my TV screen
I heard them scream, it was too dark to see

Don’t cry
I’ll try to say the right words at the right times
Sing you lullabies
Please, don’t wake up, wake up

You still think we live in a world so beautiful
You see, I think I don’t believe in this stuff anymore

Don’t cry
I’ll try to say the right words at the right times
Sing you lullabies
Please, don’t wake up, wake up
Don’t cry
I’ll try to say the right words at the right times
Sing you lullabies
Please, don’t wake up, wake up

Please, don’t wake me up
Don’t make me wake (Please)
Don’t make me wake (Don’t wake up, wake up)
Ah
Ah-ah-ah-ah…

Aijā, aijā
Saldā miegā
Aijā, aijā
Saldā miegā

Poetry Analysis

  • The general topic of the song is amorphoc, and it is part of the atmosphere of the song.
  • The spokesperson describes someone who has just fallen asleep. Beforehand, the addressee said some words before. The meaning of these words is unknown and it emphasizes the bluriness of the plot.
  • “People were talking louder from my TV screen” – when we try to avoid reality, we drown into escapism. The convenient thing isn’t coping with reality.
  • In the chorus, he asks the addressee to stop crying.
  • There is a kind of “double standard” in the song. While the spokesperson tends to get lost in another world, he tries to create an alternative world for the addressee in the song.
  • The creation of this alternative world is obtained by choosing the right words, singing lullabies and so on. He asks her not to take up, as reality is probably too hard to handle.
  • The addressee is sure that she lives in a perfect and beautiful world. However, the spokesperson isn’t naive anymore.
  • Towards the end, he asks her again not to cry. He will defend her and will put her away from the dangerous world. The song ends with the wish “Saldā miegā”, which mean sweet sleep.

Initial Personal Ranking

4th overall in semi-final 1, 8th overall

The impact of the allocation in semi-final 1

Among the countries that usually vote for Latvia, 3 countries will vote in semi-final 1: Ireland, Malta, and Portugal

Betting Odds

On the 11th of February 2023, Sudden Lights won the “Supernova 2023″.
Since the song was released, Latvia wasn’t well accepted by the bookies. Latvia has been 32-35 with the bookies, mostly around 33-34.
Currently, Latvia is 35th with the bookies.

Early Prediction

Latvia was allocated to perform in the first semi-final.
Unfortunately, this is the strongest semi-final.
It seems like qualifying will be a hard task to deal with, but it is possible.
I see Latvia as a borderline non-qualifier or even a surprising qualifier.
Prediciton: 11-13 in semi-final 1, or 17-23 in the final

The Busker – “Dance (Our Own Party)”

The Busker band was formed in 2012. The Indie-pop band consists of 3 members: David “Dav.Jr” Meilak, Jean Paul Borg, and Sean Meachen.

Allocation in Semi-Final

Malta was allocated to perform is in the first half of semi-final 1 at Eurovision 2023.
Malta is set to perform in 2nd position, after Norway and before Serbia.

Musical Review

  • It is a funk pop song.
  • The song starts with a short instrumental part composed of saxophone playing.
  • The first verse features a light drum beat with the keyboard playing. David (the lead singer) sings in a mid-high tone of voice.
  • The second verse is more rhythmic. The saxophone is combined at an early point. The lead singer sings accurately and effortlessly, with a mid-high tone of voice.
  • The chorus starts with saxophone playing. We can hear some backing vocals as well. The melody is based on drums as well. The second half of the singing is performed in a more sensual way, almost whispering.
  • We have a short instrumental part that leads us to the third verse. This verse continues the rhythmic line in the chorus. It continues with the 4th verse which has a more impressive production. The melody is more sparse, and we can hear some backing vocals.
  • We got another chorus, and thereafter quite a long instrumental part which features a 1980’s influenced production, drums, keyboards and saxophone.
  • The song ends with 2 occurences of the chorus.
  • Overall, the song is catchy and memorable. On the other hand, this happens due to the repetitivness of the song.
  • The band members have a great energy on stage, and it helps deliver the song. Nevertheless, the song could have included some more “kicks”.

Lyrics

Wait now
Can you speak up, it’s a little bit loud?
I’m a little bit lost, oh
Fucked up
Might be the drinks or the social tease of anxiety

The tension I’m getting
The faces I drew on
I can’t focus, you should know this
When did it get sucked and I’m gone

I feel better in my sweater
I got my stereo, I’ll play you songs you know
But hey, wait, what you say?

Do you wanna dance?
Do you wanna dance? (dance)
Do you wanna dance?
Do you wanna dance? (Dance, dance, dance)

It’s on
And go outside for the very first try, I can save the night (Yeah)
If you’re keen, got some indoor shoes
I can offer you, get you in the groove

The tension is lifting
Another moment would’ve been too much
It’s the real me, our own party
Our own party, (Our own party, ah!)

I feel better in my sweater
Gaga Radio, is this a song you know?
But hey, wait, what you say?

Do you wanna dance?
Do you wanna dance? (dance)
Do you wanna dance?
Do you wanna dance?

(dance)
(dance)
(dance)
(dance)

I feel better in my sweater
Gaga Radio, is this a song you know?
But hey, what do you say?

Do you wanna dance?
Do you wanna dance? (dance)
Do you wanna dance?
Do you wanna dance (Dance)
Do you wanna dance?
(Dance, dance, dance) You wanna dance
(Dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, dance, dance)

Poetry Analysis

  • The song talks about the different ways to celebrate. Some of us are more introverted, some of us are more extrovert. Therefore, each one of us has his/her own way to celebrate.
  • We also see the song as a way to deal with social events, following the Covid restrictions. During the quarentine, a lot of people got used to being alone. Therefore, going out to party can be a little bit unusual event to deal with.
  • In the first verse, the spokesperson doesn’t find himself in the party. The music is too loud, he has some difficulties in hearing the others. When he enters the party, he is lost between the different faces and visuals.
  • In the pre-chorus, he admits “I feel better in my sweater” – this is a metaphor to symbolize the convenience of being at home. There, he will choose his outfit, the songs to be played and so on.
  • Going outside for the first time (after a long time) is a little bit scary for him. He suggests sticking to indoor shoes – a thing that makes us think he prefers indoors.
  • Whatever he would do, he still remains the introverted person he is. However, he would like to welcome anyone to his own party.

The impact of the allocation in semi-final 1

Among the countries that usually vote for Malta, 5 countries will vote in semi-final 1: Azerbaijan, Croatia, Ireland, Italy and Sweden

Betting Odds

The Busker won “MESC 2023” on the 11th of February 2023.
On the first 3 days, Malta was 33rd, 29th and 31st in the odds.
Afterwards, Malta has been in the range of 27-30 places for 5 days.
Malta went down to 31st place. Thereafter, Malta was in 29-30 place for 4 days.
Since the 4th of March, Malta has moved in a range of 31-33 places, currently the country is 33rd with the bookies.

Early Prediction

Malta has to face several disadvantages:

  1. The country usually struggles with the televote, even with strong songs like in 2021.
  2. Malta was allocated to perform in the 2 position, which is known as the “death” slot in the semi-finals.
  3. In general, this is the strongest semi-final. This semi-final features some other bands like: Croatia, Latvia and Ireland.

However, the band delivers an irresistible energy and their fun on stage is contagious.
I believe that it will be hard for them to qualify, but it is possible.
Prediction: Borderline non-qualifier (11-12 in semi-final 1) or a borderline qualifier. If they qualify, they will end in 17-23 place in the final.

In the next chapter, we will discuss some participants of semi-final 2.
