On the 5th of December 2023, the EBU released the list of 37 participating countries at Eurovision 2024
Missing from the list was Romania, whose national broadcaster TVR hasn’t made a final decision regarding Eurovison 2024.
Ever since then, social media has been filled with speculations, whether Romania will join the list of participating countries.
Some sources even suggested names of potential artists to represent the country.
Later on, it was revealed that TVR got a special extension to determine Eurovision 2024 participation.
The late deadline Romania has received is the end of January 2024, which is mainly impacted by the semi-final allocation draw (to be held on Tuesday, the 30th of January 2024). Back then, TVR was pending approval of the annual budget for 2024.
Romanian magazine Fanatik released an article that sheds more light on the ongoing developments.
TVR board will hold a meeting on Thursday, the 25th of January 2024, where the board members will vote on whether the country will take part in Eurovision 2024.
One of the main considerations is the budget: TVR will have to cover a participation fee of 180,000 Euros in order to participate in the upcoming contest (this doesn’t include any budget related to national selection, making a video clip and so on)
Dan Turturică, Director of TVR commented:
We will have a board meeting on January 25. We have a reprieve from the European Broadcasting Union to give a final answer until the end of this month. We will have the board meeting. There he will submit to the vote. This is not a decision for me to make alone. It’s a decision that has to be put to a vote because it involves some big costs, there are big costs. It is a decision that will be taken by open vote by all 13 members of the Board of Directors. On the 25th, the decision will be put to the vote and after that we will announce. That’s the day when the decision is made by the board as a whole

Eurovision 2024 will be held in Malmö, Sweden.
The semi-finals will be held on the 7th and 9th of May 2024, and the grand final will be held on the 11th of May 2024
