In 2026, Slovenia was one of 5 countries that decided to withdraw from the contest, together with Spain, the Netherlands, Iceland, and Ireland. The main reason for their decision was boycotting the contest, due to Israels participation in the contets.
Ever since then, the Slovenian government has been replaced through elections. This may change the geopolitical situation.
The Eurovision blog Evrovizija reports that the national broadcaster RTV SLO hasn’t yet determined its position for Eurovision 2027.
RTV SLO spokesperson released the following comment:
RTV Slovenia has not communicated to the EBU their intention to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2027. In previous years, RTV Slovenia has generally confirmed its participation in Eurovision in the autumn. The decision for 2027 could therefore be announced during this period, or at the latest when the programme-production plan (PPN) for next year is adopted, or perhaps even earlier
Usually, national broadcasters have a first deadline to confirm their intention to participate in Eurovision in the middle of September. In addition, they can withdraw without financial consequences by the second deadline (usually between October and November).
Relying on the RTV SLO‘s response, we can learn that Slovenia may have gotten a green light to postpone its decision regarding Eurovision 2027. EBU has extended Eurovision 2027 participation to several countries: The Netherlands, Spain, Hungary, and Belgium.
However, it seems that Slovenia’s decision will be based on multiple factors, not only geopolitical ones.
RTV SLO has already mentioned budget limitations in the past as one of the factors impacting its Eurovision experience.
In their response to Evrovizija, they mention:
Regarding possible cooperation, only informative talks are currently taking place, with the financial capabilities of the public institution remaining a significant limitation.
The EBU and the national broadcaster will discuss Slovenia’s participation in the contest in the upcoming days. The agenda of the meeting is still unknown. But it is definitely seems like one step further towards considering to participate in the upcoming contest.
