Anette Brattstrom who is Melodifestivalen’s project manager said:

”We want the competitors to feel that this is an escalation before the final”.

So this means no more second chance duels. This was SVT’s plans when Melodifestivalen will be redesigned for 2022. According to Aftonbladet SVT is completely re-do the festival since 2004 which has gone under name ”Second Chance” and name was scrapped and instead a semi-final was introduced.

Annete Brattstorm also said:

”That’s right, for every year, we want to review the format and make as exciting an experience as possible for our viewers and fallowers in the app, and there we think that the Second Chance and the layout with duels needed to be reviewed.. An escalation before a final is a semi-final so it was quite a given that that was what we would do.”

Anette explain what was the purpose of Second Chance and it is:

”The purpose of the Second Chance from the beginning was that the artist would have the opportunity to redo his number from the competition if you felt that there was something to do differently. But today, almost everything is scratched to perfection so there are no major changes made. Almost no one wants to make changes and then the idea of Second Chance falls. This is what we have experienced that it has not really been an elevation before the final, but rather that it may have had a slightly worse tone.”

This can be counted as biggest remake in Melodifestivalen since 2007 when Andra Chansen became own competition on week before going to final.

How the new semi final will work ?:

The overall number of competing acts will be 28 which remain the same. During the first 4 semi-finals, two acts will advance direct to the final as normal, while two other acts will advance to the 5th semi-final. The 8 acts in Semi-Final 5 will then be divided into two groups. The two songs that receive the most votes in each group will advance to the grand final of Melodifestivalen 2022.

1st semi final of Melodifestivalen 2022 will take place on 5th February 2022 in Malmo.

Tusse won Melodifestivalen 2021 with song ”Voices” and represented Sweden at Eurovision 2021.
