Artist: Alvan & Ahez

Alexis Morvan-Rosius (better known as Alvan) is a 29 year-old French musician from Rennes (a city in the east of Brittany in northwestern France).
Alvan loves to mix different genres in his music, but he mostly does eletonic music.
He uses a lof elements and trditional chants in his compositions.
So far, he released 11 singles and a EP named “Home” in 2016.
He will release his debut album “Magma” on the 13th of May.
Ahez are a traditional vocal group, consisting of 3 women: Marine, Sterenn and Stereen.
They tend to write and sing their music in the native language of Breton.
In their songs, they tell contemporary stories with the influences of ancient myths of Brittany.
Selection Process: For the second year in a row, France has chosen a song and an artist via a national selection – “Eurovision France, c’est vous qui décidez !“.
12 artists competed in the national selection. 6 of them qualified for the second round.
In the second round, Alvan & Ahez achieved the highest ranking in the jury vore, as well as in the public vote. Therefore, they were annonuced as the winners.
They will perform the song “Fulenn“
Musical Review: It’s an electro-folk song.
The song starts with a special introduction – one of the female singers is trilling, while another singer is reciting with electronic production. The first verse is performed by another female singer. She has a stable voice with a great presence. Thereafter, we can hear Latin guitars and some forest animal voices (as well as birds chirping). The three of them join together to sing the chorus. The male singer has a low and deep voice which is the most dominant. Due to the high variance of their voices, we get satisfying and strong singing. A powerful electronic beat takes over the melody, and we can see the male singer (Alvan) dancing in the background. The second verse is performed by another singer. She sings in the Breton language. Her singing is slightly more intense. Thereafter, they all sing together, while Alvan is playing the guitar. The bridge is mysterious and dark, until the drop. At this point, the electronic motives reach their peak. The song ends with whispering and guitar playing.
I find this song unique in the line-up. The combination of electro and folk music works excellent together. Each one of the singers contributes to the song. The song is catchy and also helps us to know more about the Breton language.

Let’s go!
In the darkness of the woods germinates the night
The stars appear in a restless rustle
A feminine shadow twirls in the light of a torchBy making wild beasts I dance
I steal the fire from their gaze full of desire
and turn it into a song to sing in unison
She dances with the devil, so what?
I dance with the devil, so what?Blaze, mud, blaze, party, and mud
Forest vibrates in contact with dancing spark
Its enchanting magic rises until the tall treesBy making wild beasts I dance
I steal the fire from their gaze full of desire
and turn it in a song to sing in unisonFearless in the middle of the clearing dance the spark
Twirl and twirl around it unchained souls (x2)Lalalalalalaleno lalelalo
Lalalalalalaleno lalelalo
Lalalalalalaleno lalelalo
Lalalalalalaleno lalelaloI dance with the devil, so what?
WIth the devil I dance
She dances with the devil, so what?
Lalalalalalaleno lalelalo
Lalalalalalaleno lalelalo
Lalalalalalaleno lalelalo
Lalalalalalaleno lalelaloFearless in the middle of the clearing dances the spark
Poetry Analysis: The song tells a fairy story of a woman that dances in the forest. The atmosphere is dark, mysterious and questionable.
We are told about the wild nature, in a forest with tall trees. There is mud that decorates the view.
Not much is said about this woman, but it doesn’t matter what she looks like. Anyway, she will dance and celebrate her body and existence.
Dancing with the devil means she is stepping into the unknown.
Her dancing is sweeping, and that’s why she receives the attention of the other people in the night party. She is confident and has no fear about the future.
And maybe this is the lesson to take from the song: Be yourself, enjoy life and celebrate your own identity anywhere and anytime.
Initial Personal Ranking: 8th overall
Betting Odds: France has selected an artist and a song on the 5th of March 2022.
France was 12-13 at odds for 5 days.
Later on, the country was 10-11 at odds for 11 days.
Since the 21st of March, France has moved in a range of 12-13 places in the table.
Early Prediction: It looks like the song will be accepted more but the public, rather than the jury. Eurovision voters have proved in the past that they are into electronic and folk music. I hope that the staging will be well designed, and to see less random dance movements.
At the moment, I see France ending in 11-18 place in the final.

Artist: Mahmood & Blanco

Alessandro Mahmoud (better known as Mahmood) is a 29 year-old Italian singer-sonngwriter. He rose to fame after participating in the 6th season of “X-Factor Italy” in 2012.
In 2019, he won “Festival Di Sanremo” and was set to represent Italy at Eurovision 2019.
He performed the song “Soldi” and ended as the runner-up of Eurovision 2019.
So far, he has released 2 studio-albums: one in 2019, and the other in 2021. Both of them peaked in number 1st and 2nd respectively in the Italian charts.
Riccardo Fabbriconi (better known as Blanco) is a 19 year-old Italian singer and rapper.
He started his musical career in 2020, when he released his debut EP “Quarantine Paranoid“. After signing a contract with Universal and Island Records, he released his debut album “Blu celeste” in September 2021. The album peaked at number 1st in the Italian charts.
Since then, some of his singles conquered the Italian music charts.
Selection Process: Italy has chosen an artist and a song via the traditional “Fetival Di Sanremo 2022“. 25 artists competed in the festival. Mahmood and Blanco won the festival with the song “Brividi“:
Allocation in The Final: Italy was allocated to perform in the 9th position in the Grand Final.
Musical review: It’s an emotional classic ballad with influences of rap.
The song starts with an instrumental part composed of guitar stringing and piano playing. Mahmood opens the singing part with a fragile voice, he starts with a slow singing that little be little becomes faster. They sing the chorus together. The melody is simple and based on piano playing. Even though their voices are different, they combine well together.
Later on, they sing the chorus in the shape of one line for each performer.
Mahmood sings at the end of the chorus in a falsetto singing
The second verse is performed by Blanco. We can hear drums playing alongside piano and string elements in the melody. Blanco sings this part in a mid-high voice.
Once again, we get the chorus, this time in a more orchestral arrangement. They sing the chorus together. Mahmood’s part sounds sometimes more like a talking.
Blanco opens the bridge with a fast and emotional rapping. Mahmood continues with his warm voice. Later on, Blanco returns to non-rap singing. Mahmood gives us another high note.
The last chorus is more acoustic, the production is minimalistic and the emphasis is on the melody. They sing the chorus together, and later on each one of them sings separately.
I’m happy to see Italy sending a ballad. The song progresses nicely, with several different layers the connect together very well. I must say that in some cases, I would have preferred them to sing in a lower octave, just to be more accurate vocally.

I have dreamed of flying with you
On a bike made of diamonds
You told me you changed
I don’t see the light in your eyes anymore
What’s your fear?
A sea you can never touch the ground of
Even if sex isn’t
The way out from the bottom
Come on, don’t run away from here
Don’t leave me this wayNaked and shivering
Sometimes I don’t know how to express myself
I would love you, but I always get it wrong
And I would steal for you a sky full of pearls
I would pay for the getaway
I would even accept a lie
I would love you, but I always get it wrong
And it gives me shivers, shivers, shiversYou, waking me up in the morning
You, staining the bed with red wine
You, biting my skin
With your snake eyes
And you, the opposite of an angel
And you, like a cornered boxer
And you run away from here, you leave me this wayNaked and shivering
Sometimes I don’t know how to express myself
And I would love you, but I always get it wrong
And I would steal for you a sky full of pearls
And I would pay to getaway
I would even accept a lie
And I would love you, but I always get it wrong
And it gives me the shivers, shivers, shiversTell me I’m not right
I live locked inside a prison
I try to stay close to you
But I’m sorry if I end up fucking everything up
I can’t tell you how I feel, it’s a limit of mine
For one “I love you” I mixed my drugs with tears
I do not want anymore this poison
That we spit at each other everyday
You see, I am here
On a bike made of diamonds, one of many othersNaked and shivering
Sometimes I don’t know how to express myself
I would love you, but I always get it wrong
And I would steal for you a sky full of pearls
I will pay for the getaway
I would even accept a lie
I would love to, but I always get it wrong
And it gives me shivers, shivers, shivers
Poetry Analysis: It is a song that talks about the expression of love, and how difficult it is for some people. The spokesperson tries to find out what’s going on with his lover. It seems to him that he isn’t as excited as before. He can’t see the fire and the passion in his eyes anymore.
It feels like the solution can’t be physical, sex won’t solve it.
The spokesperson asks him not to leave, it is not too late to discuss and reach a wishful solution.
In the chorus, the addressee and the spokesperson switch roles. The lover says that he still loves him. He shivers anytime he sees him. He gives him an extraordinary experience any single day. But he has a problem – he doesn’t know how to translate emotions into actions and words.
He will do everything for his lover.
Thereafter, it is the turn of the spokesperson to reveal his feelings.
He described his lover as having an ongoing spell. His love is addicting, but also dangerous due to the lack of feelings expression. Romantic gestures like bringing wine to bed are just not enough.
The addressee spoke again. He is aware of his limitations in expressing love and emotions, especially in words. He tries to stay close to the spokesperson, but living a life like this feels like being locked in a prison. This is the reason for their daily conflicts. The addressee even confesses about the price of trying to say “I love you” – crying and using drugs.
And it leads us to the question – What is more important? Feeling comfortable in a relationship or trying to give up a little bit of yourself for the other side?
Apparently, sometimes they can’t come together.
Initial Personal Ranking: 7th overall
Betting Odds: In February 2022, Italy was the winner by the bookies. Since the 25th of February, Italy has been stabled in the 2nd place.
Early Prediction: I predict Italy will have another top 5 scores. It is a song that can create both appeal by the public and both by the jury. The beautiful Italian language will help and even most importantly: the popularity of Mahmood who has just competed at Eurovision 2019, ending in the 2nd place.

Artist: Malik Harris

Malik Harris is a 24-year-old German singer-songwriter.
His father is Ricky Harris, a German-based American television presenter, and actor.
He comes from a musical family: his grandfather was an opera singer, his grandmother was a pianist, and his father plays several instruments and teaches cello.
Malik started to engage with music at the age of 13.
He released 11 singles and one EP, “Like That Again” in 2019, and a debut album – “Anonymous Colonist” in 2021.
Selection Process: Germany has selected an artist and a song for Eurovision 2022 via a national selection – “Germany 12 Points“.
6 artists competed in the national selection. Malik won the selection after ending in first place in the public vote and 2nd with the jury.
Malik Harris will perform the song “Rockstars“
Musical Review: It’s a pop-rock ballad with rap elements. The song starts with a piano playing. Malik sings the first part (which is the chorus) in a crystal clear and stable voice. The rate is considerably slow. Thereafter, the first verse arrives. The rate is a little bit faster, he sings it with a med-low voice, sometimes slightly raspy. The second chorus melody is based on keyboards and acoustic guitar. The atmosphere sometimes feels intimate. The second verse is performed in half rapping – half-singing. It is still gentle and soft. He sings it with a low voice, while being accompanied by the acoustic guitar. Later on, it becomes more intensive, faster, and even more aggressive. We can hear some boom effects to make it more dramatic. Then the song is paused for several seconds and then he returns to singing the chorus. In this chorus, we can hear the keyboards playing while he is singing gently.
The song ends with an acoustic version of the chorus that slowly decays.
The song feels to me too safe, a predictable radio-friendly song.
I find some of the rap parts a little bit annoying. In general, it’s not a bad song, but also not a good one.
And sometimes it is dangerous at Eurovision, to have a song that won’t make people lick up their phones and vote.
Lyrics
Look where we are
We used to be the rockstars
Who never thought of no harm
‘Til this thing we call life stopped gleamin’
I wish there was a way to go back dreamin’
Remembering gets so hard
When time is moving so fast
Wish there was a way to know that we’re in
The good old days before we all just leave ’emI tried getting rid of the pain
I tried to make it go away
But it probably won’t change
Always thinking ’bout my own worries
Remеmber back when we had no worriеs
Now life just ain’t hittin’ the same
I sit here missing
Reminiscing ’bout innocent old days
When I was afraid of nobody
Now I’m afraid of being a nobody
Don’t wanna leave my bed
I’ll just stay in, never get it together
‘Cause the voices in my head
They keep saying it’ll never get betterLook where we are
We used to be the rockstars
Who never thought of no harm
‘Til this thing we call life stopped gleamin’
I wish there was a way to go back dreamin’
Remembering gets so hard
When time is moving so fast
Wish there was a way to know that we’re in
The good old days before we all just leave ’emSometimes I got this kinda sting that’s right inside my chest
It’s only purpose is convincing me that I’m a mess
And even though it’s always been an uninvited guest
It finds a way in nonetheless, wish I could change my address
And you know, just be somebody else for a couple of days
Although I’m pretty sure we all feel the same kind of way
‘Cause if you think about it
Aren’t we all sat in a place where we look back on better days
And wish they weren’t so far away?
I wish that I could just go back and be the way I was
I wish I’d still not give a damn ’bout how I come across
I wish the way I saw myself had never gotten lost
And all the worries, all the thoughts, all the thinking, all the parts
So exhausting, always caught up inside my doubts and flaws
And I’ma count them all
Somebody catch me, I’m ’bout to fall
Yeah, I’m ’bout to fall
Can we press pause
Or do a restart and be who we are?We used to be the rockstars
Who never thought of no harm
‘Til this thing we call life stopped gleamin’
I wish there was a way to go back dreamin’
Remembering gets so hard
When time is moving so fast
Wish there was a way to know that we’re in
The good old days before we all just leave ’emWe used to be the rockstars (Didn’t we?)
We used to be the rockstars (Didn’t we?)
We used to be the rockstars
We used to be the rockstarsRemembering gets so hard
When time is moving so fast
Wish there was a way to know that we’re in
The good old days before we all just leave ’em
Poetry Analysis: The song discusses cuddling up to the past. The song starts with the spokesperson approaching any of us. He asks us whether we remember the good days in the past when life was calm and we didn’t have any worries. But now, we are older, and the complexity of life isn’t hidden anymore. While life was perfect in the past, the spokesperson used to see himself as a rockstar. This is a metaphor for the glamour days when one could enjoy the adventures of life. He wished he could have returned to the good days, enjoy them and accumulate these days as comforting reminders for the tough days.
Back then, he had no worries and life didn’t really challenge him. But today his main fear is being nobody, being a person that won’t make any impact in the world.
The current reality makes him a little bit depressed. There are days when he isn’t even able to get out of bed and deal with life.
He has gotten tired of thinking about all the drawbacks of the present and he is brave to ask for help – can somebody catch him before he falls?
Initial Personal Ranking: 30th overall
Betting Odds: Germany has chosen an artist and a song for the 4th of March 2022.
Germany was 21st for 2 days and then went down to the 26th, 29th, and 25th positions.
Later on, Germany was in a range of 25-29 places for 10 days, then spending one day in the 23-24 places for 20 days. Since the 5th of April, Germany has moved in a range of 24-27 places.
Early Prediction: I think Germany will probably be the lowest ranking country among the Big 5 countries. I predict Germany will end in 17-25 place.

Artist: Chanel

Chanel Terrero Martínez (better known as Chanel) is a 30 year-old Cuban-Spanish singer, dancer and actress.
She was born in Havana, Cuba and moved to Catalonia at the age of 3.
She has taken singing, ballet and acting lessons from a young age.
At the age of 16, she started her career in musical theatre.
During 2010s she participated in stage musicals such as Mamma Mia!, Flashdance, El guardaespaldas and El rey león.
Her acting career includes various roles in television and cinema, both nationally and internationally.
Chanel took part in the castings for the Spanish stage production of “West Side Story“. She was one of the 3 finalists for the role of Anita. She also was between the 5 finalists worldwide for the same role in Steven Spielberg’s film version of the musical, “West Side Story.”
“Slo Mo” is her debut single.
Selection Process: Spain has chosen an artist and a song via the “Benidorm Fest 2022″. 13 artists took part in the Spanish selection.
The show included 2 semi-finals and a final.
The results were composed of a 50% expert jury, 25% Demoscopic panel, and 25% public vote.
Chanel ended first with an expert jury, second with a dermoscopic panel, and third with the public vote. However, it was enough for her to win the whole contest.
Chanel will perform the song “Slo Mo“:
Musical Review: It’s an upbeat Latin pop song.
The song starts with a theatrical instrumental part that is being finalized by an upbeat beat.
This beat continues to the first verse. Chanel sings it at a fast rate and has a lot of vocal charisma.
The dance beat and the rhyme in the lyrics are the main motives in the first verse.
The pre-chorus includes backing vocals, and the beat changes into the sound of clapping.
The chorus is performed in a lower tone and at a faster rate. It has the vibe of a dance floor in a club.
The chorus includes lyrics in English and Spanish.
The second verse has a similar structure to the first one, but the majority of its lyrics are in English.
The chorus suggests a Latin party to be addicted to and it makes you dance.
In the last pre-chorus, we can hear some vocal improvisations alongside backing vocals.
It ends with another occurrence of the chorus.
I think the song is catchy and had a happy vibe. However, it lacks uniqueness.
I am not a big fan of the lyrics. That sometimes seems like an effort to make rhymes.
With a good performance and some dancers on stage, it can be as memorable as “Fuego” by Eleni.
However, I don’t see the jury going crazy about this one.

Let’s go!
Mommy arrived
The queen, the boss, a Bugatti
The world is going crazy with this party
If I have a problem, it’s not monetary
I will make all the daddies go crazy
I’m always first, never secondary
As soon as I do doom, doom
With my boom, boom
I have them going zoom, zoom
To MiamiAnd don’t get confused
Ladies and gentlemen

Poetry Analysis: The spokesperson in the song is a self-confident woman. She arrives at a party and she is sure that anyone is staring at her. With her presence and look, she known that each man can be hers. In the song she praises her body, and tells one of the guys that she knows how to drive him crazy.
Initial Personal Ranking: 28th overall
Betting Odds: Spain has chosen its artist and song for Eurovision 2022 at the end of January 2022.
In the first week after the selection, Spain moved within a range of 7-11 places.
The following week, Spain was 13-15 at odds.
Between February 11th and March 19th, Spain was 9-12 with the bookies.
Between March 20th and March 28th, Spain was the 8th in the table.
Between March 29th and April 14th, Spain was the 7th in the table.
Since then, Spain is in 6th place with the bookies.
Early Prediction: I think Spain will do much better than in recent years.
But I’m not sure how the jury will react to this one.
I predict Spain will finish in 6-12 places in the final.

Artist: Sam Ryder

Sam Ryder is a 32 year-old English singer.
He began working as a singer and guitarist in the music industry in 2009.
He rose to fame in 2020, during the Covid lockdowns, when he uploaded his covers to popular songs on the Tik-Tok platform. By the of 2020, he had become the most followed British artist on the platform. This led him to sign a record contract with Parlophone and the management agency TaP Music.
So far, the singer has released 1 EP – “The Sun’s Gonna Rise” – in 2021, and 7 singles.
Selection Process: With a collaboration of TaP music and BBC, Sam Ryder was internally selected to represent the country.
Sam Ryder will perform the song “Spaceman“:
Musical Review: It is an alt-pop song. The song starts with a dreamlike keyboard playing and the sound of a musical box. He opens the singing part with a soft and high voice. The musical box is sampled alongside a monotonous keyboard playing. In the second verse, he sings more powerfully, but still keeps on the high octave. The chorus starts with drum playing, therefore it is more rhythmic. We can hear the electric guitar as well. Thereafter, the keyboard playing is back. The chorus reaches peak point, and then Sam sings it much more calmly.
The drum beat continues to the third verse, alongside the same melody as in the first verse. Sam sings this verse with a more raspy voice, and therefore in a lower octave as well.
The chorus comes in again, it is powerful and catchy. The combination of guitar and keyboard creates a unique atmosphere together. Thereafter, the bridge arrives. He sings it in a mid-high voice, the melody isn’t uniform. Sam continues singing with a falsetto voice and then we get the chorus.
The closure of the song is simple and acoustic. We can only hear his voice and basic keyboards playing. He uses some manners to close the song.
I found this song effective and memorable. Singing his song isn’t an easy task, but I’m sure he will do it properly. It is a radio-friendly song, but the singer’s vocal and interpretation make it special.
This is one of the best United Kingdom‘s songs in recent years (together with 2017).
I would like to have meaningful staging, but not a too complicated one.
Lyrics
If I was an astronaut
I’d be floating in mid-air
And a broken heart would just belong
To someone else down there
I would be the center
Of my lonely universe
But I’m only human
And I’m crashing down to EarthIf I was an astronaut
I’d have a bird’s eye view
I’d circle round the world
And keep on coming back to you
In my floating castle
I’d rub shoulders with the stars
But I’m only human
And I’m drifting in the darkI’m up in space, man!
Up in space, man!
I’ve searched around the universe
Been down some black holes
There’s nothing but space, man!
And I wanna go homeIf I was an astronaut
I’d speak to satеllites
My navigation systems
Would search for othеr life
But I’d be up here thinking
‘Bout what I left behind
‘Cause I’m only human
With the real world on my mindI’m up in space, man!
Up in space, man!
I’ve searched around the universe
Been down some black holes
There’s nothing but space, man!
And I wanna go homeGravity keeps pulling me down
As long as you’re on the ground, I’ll stick around
Stick around
I’ll stick aroundI’m up in space, man!
Up in space, man!
I’ve searched around the universe
Been down some black holes
There’s nothing but space, man!
No
Oh, I’m in the wrong place, man!
Nothing but, nothing but, nothing but space, man!
Nothing but, nothing but, nothing but space, man!I’ve searched around the universe
Been down some black holes
Nothing but space, man
And I wanna go home
Poetry Analysis: The song talks about how far can we get with our dreams. The spokesperson uses the metaphor of an astronaut in the space to demonstrate how it feels like to disconnect from out daily troubles and diving into an imaginary world.
At the beginning, he tells us about what probably led him to want disconnect from the reality – a broken heart. Up here, in space, broken heart is not relevant due to the distance from earth. The same happens in his dream. In his imaginary dream or fictive world, he is the only one that determined everything. Saying this, he is still aware of the limitations – each dream has its end. Once the end of the dream arrives, it is time to deal with reality.
When diving this dream, he keeps on searching for the perfect life and for life without worries. But when he is in space, the only thing he could find out was black holes. This is the metaphor for the empty and meaningless reality in dreams.
When it looks like everything is perfect, the truth is that something hasn’t been discovered. Life without troubles are life that have to existence and no aim.
Initial Personal Ranking: 12th overall
Betting Odds: The United Kingdom has released “Spaceman” as its Eurovision 2022 entry on the 10th of March 2022.
Since then, the country has been stable in 4th place at odds.
Early Prediction: Finally, the United Kingdom takes Eurovision seriously and it looks like it will pay off. I believe that both the jury and the public will support the song. However, I think it will be more jury oriented.
I predict the United Kingdom will end in 5-12 place in the final.
