Latvia: 121 Songs Were Submitted For “Supernova 2023”

Yesterday, the 1st of December, the submission window for the “Supernova 2023″ (Latvian selection for Eurovision 2023) was closed.

According to Latvian news website LSM, a total of 121 songs were submitted for Supernova 2023.
In 2022, around 130 songs were submitted.

Agnese Štrause-Kubliņa, editorial director of LTV‘s children, youth and entertainment programs, commented:

“We are pleased that the artists appreciate “Supernova” and want to represent Latvia at the Eurovision Song Contest. This year’s record-high viewing figures for “Supernova” and Eurovision prove that the public sympathizes with the musicians and wants to actively participate in the process of selecting the winner. The candidate for the 2023 “Supernova” lineup of performers is magnificent – several participants from previous years will try to test their strength in an intense battle, and of course the audience will have the opportunity to get to know and appreciate new musicians as well”

According to her, we can expect a diverse line-up of artists and genres.
The line-up will be composed of new artists alongside artists that have already competed in “Supernova” in the past.

A professional jury panel, created by LTV, has judged the submitted songs and shortlisted several of them to compete at “Supernova 2023“.
The jury included representatives of the Latvian music industry, events and television, as well as foreign professionals. Their names will be revealed only after the final of “Supernova 2023”.
The criteria were:

  • Song structure – originality, arrangement, message, compliance with modern market trends;
  • Song and Participant’s opportunities and potential to compete in the international pop music market;
  • Performer’s vocal abilities and personality;
  • Past achievements in the industry or potential for future achievements and existence in the real market.

In January 2023, LTV will publish the names of the entries selected by the jury and enter the next round, including Song Authors.
The public will have a say in choosing a reduced number of acts for the next round.

The number of shows “Supernova 2023” is still unknown, but will probably include at least 2 television shows

Citi Zēni represented Latvia at Eurovision 2022 with the song ”Eat Your Salad”.They came in 14th place in semi-final 1 with 55 points.

Will Latvia finally get out of the non-qualification zone that the country has entered since 2017?
