Albina and Familja Kelmendi – Duje

Albina Kelmendi was born in Kosovo. She is a 25 year old singer, who has studied clarinet and piano.
In 2014, she reached the final of “The Voice of Albania”, where she was mentored by Elsa Lila

Albina & Familja Kelmendi consist of Albina, her 3 siblings (Albin, Sidorela and Vesa) and their parents (Albana and Bujar)

Selection Process

As always, Albania selected an artist and a song for Eurovision via the traditional music festival “Festivali i Këngës“.
26 artists competed in the festival this year, 21 of them qualified for the final.
The winner of the festival (selected by the professional jury) was Elsa Lila.
However, the public chose the Eurovision representative – Albina & Familja Kelmendi

They will perform the song “Duje”:

Allocation in Semi-Final

Albania will perform in the second half of semi-final 2 at Eurovision 2023.
Albania is set to perform in the 14th position.
The country will perform after Austria, and before Lithuania.

Musical Review

  • It is a Balkan mid-tempo ballad
  • The song starts with a swirling outcry by Albina, who is joined by Turkish string instruments later on.
  • The first verse opens with an oriental beat, alongside bass and electric guitar riffs. Albina sings it with a fast talking style, and she is accompanied by Alban and later on by Sidorela and Vesa.
  • The pre-chorus is more rhythmic, Albina sings it with some trilling, mid-high tone of voice and manners. At this point of the melody, we can also hear some flute playing
  • The chorus is performed by several members of the family. It starts with the keyboard playing and slowly the oriental beat is added and conquers the melody. The chorus is more hymnish. It ends with a drum beat, Turkish string elements and clap effect.
  • Therefter we get another pre-chorus, with the beat from previously. At this time, the production is more “kicking”, as it includes a variety of instruments.
  • The chorus which comes after is performed by all the family members.
  • The song ends with a rhythmic pre-chorus performed by Albina, as the other members sing the chorus.
  • It is probably the only Balkan song in this year’s contest. However, it feels too dramatic for me. The atmosphere is heavy, and something in the melody is just not appealing enough.
  • Albina is a great vocalist, but sometimes giving too much is hard to handle.

Translated Lyrics

Something inside is holding my breath
I don’t know what it is
I want to stop it
(What’s happening)
Having everything
And having everything
But not being happy

They are breaking up
Just for a word
They are breaking up, they killed the love
They are breaking up,
They forgot they have a home
A table with kids…

Love her/him, like before
Save the love
Save it for your life
Don’t hit it with stones
Love her/him like before
Save the love
Save it for your life

They are breaking up
Just for a word
They are breaking up, they killed the love
They are breaking up,
They forgot they have a home
A table with kids…

Love her/him, like before
Save the love
Save it for your life
Don’t hit it with stones
Love her/him like before
Save the love
Save it for your life

(Love her/him)
They are breaking up
(Love her/him)
Just for a word
They are breaking up, they killed the love
(Love her/him)
They are breaking up
(Love her/him)
They forgot they have a home
A table with kids…
(Love her/him)

Poetry Analysis

  • The song deals with the importance of unity and prioritisation of the family
  • In the first verse, the spokesperson admits that she has everything, but still there’s something that bothers her and makes her unhappy.
  • In the second verse, the topic of the song becomes clearer. The spokesperson mentions “They forgot they have a home/ A table with kids”. This can be translated as a family conflict (maybe between parents). She also used the description of “they are breaking up, they killed the love”. By using this metaphor, we can learn how powerful and severe this conflict is in her point of view
  • The chorus already gives a hint of the solution. Relying on the “sweet past” will help us make it through the conflicts and fights. The fight is described under the metaphor of “hit it with stones”.

Initial Personal Ranking

15th overall in semi-final 2, 34th overall

The impact of the allocation in semi-final 2

Among the countries that usually vote for Albania, 4 countries will vote in semi-final 2: Greece, San Marin, Austria and Belgium

Betting Odds

On the night of the 23rd of December 2022, Albania chose Albina and Familja Kelmendi to represent the country at Eurovision 2023.
Ever since then, the country has been ranked as 36-37 in the odds, with the exception of 2 days in 34-35 places.
Currently, Abania is 37th in the odds.
Historically (not just in 2023), Albania has almost always been ranked in the bottom 5 at odds.

Early Prediction

Predicting Albania’s fate at Eurovision looks like a challenge.
On the one hand, it is probably the only Balkan song this year, and therefore the supporters of this genre will find a home in this one. That’s why I can see them getting support from Albanian diaspora, as well as from Balkan/Eastern countries: Greece, Cyprus, Romania and etc.
On the other hand, I am afraid that the song will be “too heavy” for some of the voters.

Prediction (One of the options)

  • Qualifying and ending in 20-26 place in the final
  • Borderline non-qualifier (11-13 in semi 2)

Allocation in Semi-Final

Cyprus was allocated to perform in the first half of semi-final 2 at Eurovision 2023.
Cyprus is set to perform in 6th position after Belgium and before Iceland

Musical Review

  • It is a mid-tempo pop ballad.
  • The song starts with pre-recorded layers of vocal harmonies,.
  • The first verse is quite slow. The atmosphere is emotional. He sings with a mid-low tone of voice. The melody is based on a simple keyboard playing. There are some effects over his vocals (reverb, autotune and so on).
  • Pre-chorus is faster. We can hear a different beat in the melody. He sings it with a lower tone of voice.
  • The chorus is slower and much more powerful. It has a more electro pop taste. We can hear some backing vocals and once again the harmonies from the beginning. He finliazed it with some vibrations.
  • The second verse features a lot of backing vocals. He sings with a changing amplitude. The melody is more rhythmic than the first one.
  • The second chorus arrives with a very strong drum beat that sometimes defeats his voice. Personally, I feel like the production isn’t balanced.
  • Thereafter, we get a falsetto part which is a composition of the chorus with a very gentle and fragile interpretation.
  • Finally, we got the final chorus.
  • Overall, it feels a little bit too polished, predictable and linear. This song includes some challenging vocal moments

Lyrics

The lights went out
I hit the ground
You didn’t mind that I was bleeding out
You filled my life
With minor songs
I loved you but you loved to do me wrong
I miss your kiss, gasoline and a matchstick
Red Lights, flashes, rising out of the ashes

Oh, I see you
For who you are
But you can’t break, a broken heart

You lift me up and leave me in the gutter
And tear me up and move on to another
I’m torn apart but I am a survivor
You can’t, you can’t break a broken heart
Woo-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh…
You can’t break a broken heart
Woo-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh…

An all-time low
But I’ll get by
And over you I’ll find the highest high
You did your best
To do your worst
I got used to all the ways it hurt
Feel the fever telling me that I need her
Science fiction turning into an addiction

Oh, I see you
For who you are
But you can’t break, a broken heart

You lift me up and leave me in the gutter
And tear me up and move on to another
I’m torn apart but I am a survivor
You can’t, you can’t break a broken heart
Woo-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh…
You can’t break a broken heart
Woo-ooh-ooh…

Oh I miss your kiss, gasoline and a matchstick
Red Lights, flashes, rising from the ashes…
You lift me up and leave me in the gutter
And tear me up and move on to another (To another)
I’m torn apart but I am a survivor

You can’t break a
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah…
You can’t break a broken heart
Ah-ah-ah-ah…
You can’t, you can’t break a broken heart
You can’t, you can’t, you can’t break a broken heart
You can’t, you can’t break a broken heart (Oh…)
You can’t
You can’t break a broken heart!

Poetry Analysis

  • The song tells the full cycle story of a relationship.
  • The song starts with a dark atmosphere. The spokesperson tell about a crisis he is going through – “I hit the ground/ You didn’t mind that I was bleeding out“.
  • He loves the addressee, but he feels like it isn’t meant to be. While he loves her, she enjoys to treat him wrong.
  • He hints that it doesn’t take a lot to love him – “You filled my life with minor songs”
  • In the chorus, he reveals the story. He is a heart-broken, but it isn’t the first time it happens. Therefore, he will be stronger and rise from the ashes. Therefore, his heart won’t be broken because of her (As it is already broken).
  • He feels like he is the lowest point of his life. But he is still hopeful to go back up high. However, he sees her as one that made the maximal effort to hurt him.
  • He still missed her on the physical aspect (“kiss, gasoline and a matchstick”).

Initial Personal Ranking

8th is semi-final 2, 21st place overall.

The impact of the allocation in semi-final 2

Among the countries that usually vote for Cyprus, 6 countries will vote in semi-final 2: Greece, Armenia, Albania, San Marino, UK and Georgia

Betting Odds

On the 2nd of March 2023, “Break a Broken Heart” was released.
The song has moved in the a range of 24-27 place.
Recently, Cyprus has mostly been 24-25 with the bookies.

Early Prediction

When talking about Cyprus this year, it is all about the live performance.
The song is one of the most challenging to perform live, including falsetto and high notes.
If Andrew will manage to do it correctly, he will qualify. Otherwise, I see a scenario he can stay outsife the final.
In case of qualifying, I believe Cyprus will end 15-20 in the final.

Allocation in Semi-Final

Greece was allocated to perform in the first half of semi-final 2 at Eurovision 2023.
Greece is set to perform in 8th position, after Iceland and before Poland.

Musical Review

  • It is an emotional ballad.
  • The song starts with Victor’s low voice, the melody is based on guitar riffs. The melody is quite basic and monotonous.
  • Pre-chorus is faster and more emotional. You can hear the keyboard playing, alongside the guitar.
  • The chorus is faster, Victor uses a higher tone of his voice. The melody is based on acoustic guitar.
  • The second verse is more folky, with guitar cyclic melody as its basis. This verse is longer.
  • Guitar stringing and drums beat lead us to the chorus.
  • The second pre-chorus starts with stronger vocals and acostuc guitar.
  • The second pre-chorus suggests a melody change. First of all, we can hear some fading echo backing vocals. Second of all, the melody is based on soft electronic percussion elements.
  • His voice gets a more husky color.
  • The last chorus is based on stronger backing vocals, and pleasant background music. The song is more hymnish at this point.
  • Overall, a very nice singer-songwriter song that delivers emotionally.
  • One of my problems is Victor’s diction, which makes his singing a little bit unclear. Sometimes, it is maybe too fast to make it clear.
  • I’m afraid the song isn’t memorable enough, especially the verses.
  • We will need captivating staging in order to elevate it.

Lyrics

Late August
Feet start to shake heart starts to ache
Can’t focus
Panic, I lay on the floor and I hate that I’m holding on
My lungs will break can’t stop to make
My mind up
Time starts to rain clouds not afraid

Of the pain they’re giving
Anxious the way I’m breathing
Can’t say that I am longing for
Another day to break my spirit
Insane and I can’t tell who’s winning
Wish this was something I could just ignore

Well you know what they say
Lost souls make sure no one loses their way
Hurt ones can’t stand seeing others in pain
Oh I am both now I got too much on my plate
And I save all the others ’cause for me it’s too

Nostalgic mind
I miss the days when my heart wouldn’t ache and
I’m drowning, time
Quicksand of life, we don’t livе to die
Now I’m tryna, fight
All of the lights that leavе me so blind
As a writer
But I’m not an actor no I don’t live my own

Life and I hate my feelings
I’m overwhelmed and heated
Can’t say that I am longing for
Another day to break my spirit
Insane and I can tell who’s winning
Wish this was something I could just ignore

Well you know what they say (Yeah-eh-eh)
Lost souls make sure no one loses their way
Hurt ones can’t stand seeing others in pain
Oh I am both now I got too much on my plate
And I save all the others ’cause for me it’s too

Oh yeah

Well you know what they say (Yeah, oh-oh-oh)
Lost souls make sure no one loses their way
Hurt ones can’t stand seeing others in pain
Oh I am both now I got too much on my plate
And I save all the others ’cause for me it’s too late

Poetry Analysis

  • The song deals with important subject like mental health, anxiety, depression and self acceptance.
  • The song describe the end of the summer (end of August). The light and warm of summer are also a metaphor for the ending of a happy period time.
  • Dealing with anxiety, it is even hard for him to put his feet on the ground. It is also hard to breathe (“My lungs will break”).
  • The mood overloads him and wash him like rain clouds.
  • It makes him wonder, shall he wait for another day? What will be the difference, if he continues to be controlled by the fear and depression.
  • “Insane and I can’t tell who’s winning” – He can’t figure out whether he will defeat the depression or vice versa.
  • Lost souls make sure no one loses their way/ Hurt ones can’t stand seeing others in pain” – The chorus gives more hope. It talks about the mutual fate of all the people who come across such difficulties. We can understand it as “it takes one to know one”. It also hinted that people who have been through such situations, will be the first one to support others.
  • The next verse describes his situation from a personal point of view. He missed the days when pain and depression weren’t.
  • The song ends again with the chorus, but with a different ending. This time, he mentions again that importance of supporting each other. Sadly, he says it is too late for him to be saved. He will dedicate his life to save others and pull them out of the depression depth.

Initial Personal Ranking

11th overall in semi-final 2, 26th overall.

The impact of the allocation in semi-final 2

Among the countries that usually vote for Greece, 5 countries will vote in semi-final 2: Cyprus, Albania, Armenia, San Marino, and Romania

Betting Odds

The song was released on the 12th of March 2023.
Ever since then, Greece is 28-29 with the bookies.

Early Prediction

Greece will compete with a radio-friendly ballad.
To begin with, the song is a more jury bait, than public favorite.
Unfortunately, jury won’t be voting in the semi-finals, and that’s why I believe it will be difficult (but possible!) to qualify.
Over the years, ballads have received some support from the public. Some of the have even reached the top 5 in the final. I am afraid this one isn’t strong enough to sneak into the top of the public.
Prediction: I’m in the middle with this one. I tend to believe Greece won’t qualify. However, there’s a chance it will qualify. If so, Greece will end in place 18-26 in the final.

Piqued Jacks – Like An Animal

Piqued Jacks is an Italian rock band that was formed in 2006 in Buggiano.
The band’s line-up was changed several times.
The current line up consists of:

  • Francesco “littleladle” Bini (2006–present) – bass, backing vocals
  • Tommaso “HolyHargot” Oliveri (2017–present) – drums

Selection Process and Song

San Marino held the longest national selection this year – “Una Voce Per San Marino 2023″, featuring artists from all over the world.
106 artists reached the semi-finals, 22 of them qualified for the final.
Each round was determined by a jury panel.
Piqued Jacks won the selection with “Like An Animal”

Allocation in Semi-Final

San Marino will perform in the second half of semi-final 2 at Eurovision 2023.
San Marino is set to perform is in 12th position, after Georgia and before Austria.

Musical Review

  • It is a rock song
  • The song starts with a short instrumental introduction, composed of bass and electric guitar.
  • The first part after the intro is the chorus of the song. The lead singer sings it in a strained way.
  • The first verse is based on electric guitar playing. The lead singer sings it in a lower tone of voice, we can hear the band members as backing vocalists. Later on, a drum beat is added as well. The backing vocals create a kind of a “choir” effect.
  • Thereafter, we get the chorus. The lead singer uses some vibrato in his singing. The word “animal” is highlighted with some backing vocals. The melody is still based on electric and bass guitar.
  • The second verse is less rhythmic and it sounds more like a classic rock. This time, we have some studio effects over the pre-recorded backing vocals (composing and blending I guess)
  • Thereafter, we get 2 additional choruses with the same structure.
  • The bridge starts with some electronic production over their voices. We can hear echoes and fading vocals. The emphasis is on the instruments.
  • The song ends with a drum beat.
  • Overall, it it a decent rock song. However, it didn’t grab me as I wished for. I feel like the song is too repetitive. The revamped version is indeed better, but the “unpredictable” part comes too late and it is too short. Furthermore, something feels too “laid back” in the vocal performance.

Lyrics

C’mon, baby, come and find me
I can smell you like an animal (Animal)
Bring the party, Aphrodite, and I’ll chase you on the dancefloor

You have, you have a snake eyes
And I get, I get butterflies
You have, you have a snake eyes
With your hips, with your sexy look, you paralyze
And I get, I get butterflies
In my ears, in my stomach all the time

C’mon, baby, come and find me
I can smell you like an animal (Animal)
Bring the party, Aphrodite, and I’ll chase you on the dancefloor
C’mon, baby, come and find me
I can smell you like an animal (Animal)
Bring the party, Aphrodite, and I’ll chase you on the dancefloor

You have, you have a biting tongue
And it gets, it gets me so unstrung
You have, you have a biting tongue
To tie me up and deviate my inner thoughts
And it gets highly dangerous
Like a drug in my veins, you are poison

C’mon, baby, come and find me
I can smell you like an animal (Animal)
Bring the party, Aphrodite, and I’ll chase you on the dancefloor
C’mon, baby, come and find me
I can smell you like an animal (Animal)
Bring the party, Aphrodite, and I’ll chase you on the dancefloor

C’mon, baby (I can smell you like an animal)
C’mon, baby

The way
She knows the way
The way to turn me on
The way (She knows the way)
She knows the way (She knows the way)
The way to turn me on

Poetry Analysis

  • The song talks about sexual appeal. It draws some parts of sexuality as animal nature.
  • The spokesperson uses his sharp senses, as part of the courtship process.
  • He describes her as Aphrodite (ancient Greek goddess of sexual love and beauty)
  • The woman he wants to impress is also described as devious (“a snake eyes”). He is mainly impressed by the way she looks (hips and sexy look).
  • However, it isn’t clear what is her relation towards his courtship. He wants to chase her, and it can give us a hint that it might be one directional.
  • Later on, he becomes addicted to her. Everything she does, makes him forget about himself and focus on his animal instinct – “a biting tongue”, “drug in my veins, you are poison”

Initial Personal Ranking

16th overall in semi-final 2, 36th overall

The impact of the allocation in semi-final 2

Among the countries that usually vote for San Marino, 4 countries will vote in semi-final 2: Albania, Greece, Georgia, and Poland

Betting Odds

On the 25th of February 2023, Piqued Jacks won the “Una Voce Per San Marino 2023″.
Since the song was released.
San Marino was 31st for the first 2 days.
Later on, San Marino’s chances decreased and the country was 33rd with the bookies.
Ever since then, San Marino has moved in the range of 33-35 place.

Early Prediction

Piqued Jacks are charismatic and looks confident on stage. However, the song isn’t appealing enough for the average viewer. I think that other artists might steal the show for them (like Slovenia).
Prediction: Non qualifier, 14-16 in semi-final 2.

The band Joker Out will represent Slovenia at Eurovision 2023:

Allocation in Semi-Final

Slovenia was allocated to perform in the second half of semi-final 2 at Eurovision 2023.
Slovenia is set to perform in 10th position, after Poland and before Georgia.

Musical Review

  • It is a dance pop song with influences of rock music.
  • The song starts with a small part of the chorus as the introduction. Bojan‘s singing makes it even catchier. The melody is based on guitar and bass playing Towards the end we can hear drum playing
  • The first verse is quite rhythmic and danceable. Bojan’s vocals are great.
  • The pre-chorus starts with a higher-tone of voice backing vocals, given by one of the band members. The melody is quite festive, but also has a “darker” side, given by the bass stringing. Towards the end of this part, we get a more “formal” interpretation that’s expressed by lower and huskier tone of voice.
  • Thereafter, the chorus comes, with some backing vocals given by the band members. The melody is based on electric guitar, bass guitar and drums. We can hear some 1980’s production. The chorus is finalized with an instrumental part (that’s mainly based on guitars and drums).
  • The bridge starts almost acoustically, and thereafter we can hear some processed percussion sound that’s joined by electric guitar. Bojan sings it in a fragile voice, and then more powerfully
  • Coming after is another chorus with a more rock-oriented production.
  • The song ends with an unplugged part, composed with the guitars only. Bojan sings it slower and more emotionally.
  • Overall, a very effective and catchy song! They have great chemistry on stage.
  • They created a very balanced and convincing combination between dance and rock.

Translated Lyrics

We’ll be dancing the night away
We’ll love each other and play
As if there was no tomorrow

Ever fewer words, thin ice burning under our feet
But we’re running away from the draft
You must only for 810,000 years
So that the soul can breathe a little

(Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe) You win if you stay alive
(I’ll take everything from you) You get nothing
(A, a, a) Do you really want this?

The game of hatred is for you, thank you very much
Don’t count on us, on us

We’ll be dancing the night away
We’ll love each other and play
As if there was no tomorrow
We won’t count the hours until the dawn
We’ll be jumping across the mountains
To be embraced by the sky

The first rain will wash away all the glitter
So it doesn’t steal the magic from the dance floors
The darkness will light the fire in our eyes

The game of hatred is for you, thank you very much
Don’t count on us, louder!

We’ll be dancing the night away
We’ll love each other and play
As if there was no tomorrow
We won’t count the hours until the dawn
We’ll be jumping across the mountains
We’ll accept that we’re eternal
And happy only as long as the sky keeps embracing us
We’ve danced the night away until the morning
Loved and played all night long
We lived as if there was no tomorrow

Poetry Analysis

The song talks about living the life with focusing on the enjoyment of the moment. The song emphasizes values like unity (the spokesperson is “we”). If there’s no tomorrow, there is no need to count the hours until the end of the party.
The party isn’t necessarily a real one. It symbolized the present.

Prediction: 13-19 in the final
