Eurovision 2024: Empowering Producers with Greater Influence on Grand Final Running Order

Back in March 2024, the EBU and SVT informed the delegations and the public about some changes in the contest format.

The majority of the changes were related to the voting procedure:

  • A Longer voting period for the rest of the world,
  • Having the automatic qualifiers performing in the semi-finals
  • Opening the grand final voting lines before the first song

Earlier today, another change has been announced, just less a month before the contest starts.
Ever since 2013, each finalists allocates one of the 2 halves of the grand final show.

However, this time, each one of the finalists (besides the host country Sweden who have drawn the 1st spot in the running order) will have 3 options:

  • First Half (Songs 2-13)
  • Second Half (Songs 14-26)
  • Producer’s Choice – Any of the halves

The 3rd category was added this year and it is meant to increase the number of options producer will have in determined the running order. The aim is to have more possibilities for a running order which will enable each song to shine and a competitive TV show.
Historically, the former method allowed situations where one of the halves is much more competitive than the another one.

The allocation will work as follows: 6 countries will get an allocation in the first half, other 6 countries will get an allocation in the second half and the remaining 13 countries will get the “Producer’s Choice” ticket

Christer Björkman, Eurovision Song Contest 2024 Producer, reacted:

“It’s all about creating the best TV show possible and giving all artists a chance to shine. In previous years, with just the First Half and Second Half draws you might find many ballads ended up in the same part of the show or many favorites were drawn to perform in the same half. Adding the flexibility of Producer’s Choice gives me the ability to create an even better flow of different tempos and an even more thrilling Grand Final.”

Eurovision 2024 will be held in Malmö, Sweden.
The semi-finals will be held on the 7th and 9th of May 2024, and the grand final will be held on the 11th of May 2024
