Israel: Eurovision 2023 Representative Will Be Chosen Internally

Israel has officially confirmed its participation at Eurovision 2023.
And now it’s time to reveal more details regarding the mechanism of selection process.

Between the year 2015 – 2022 (with the exception of 2021), Israel used music reality shows for selection of artists.
In 2015 – 2020, the chosen representative was the winner of “The Rising Star For Eurovision” (“Hakochav Haba La’Eurovision). The program was broadcast by “Keshet 12“.

In 2022, the formula was updated with the Israeli broadcaster collaborating with Reshet 13 that suggested “X-Factor Israel 2022“.

Earlier this year, the Israeli broadcaster Kan has raised a tender where 2 additional broadcasters of Israel (“Keshet 12” and “Reshet 13”). However, these 2 broadcasters have decided to avoid of suggest themselves in the tender for Eurovision 2023, due to high costs required by Kan.

The continuation was unclear, as 2 options were on the table:

  • Writing a new tender with more modest requirements
  • Kan managing the selection process themselves (with the option of internal selection or national selection)

The official Facebook page “Kan Eurovision” has just released an important update regarding Eurovision 2023 plans:

The Israeli artist for Eurovision 2023 will be chosen internally!
It will be the first time since 2014, that Israel will choose an artist internally.
Israeli broadcaster Kan is currently focusing on locating a professional committee composed of 9 people that will be in charge of raising potential artists to represent Israel at Eurovision 2023.
The committee members will be the broadcasters representatives , as well as musicians and experts.
It seems like one of the criteria will be local success of the artist in the digital platforms and radio stations.

It is still unknown whether the song will be chosen internally or will the public be involved in choosing the song for Eurovision 2023.
