Around the Continent 2023: Week 21

As we continue our weekly series Around The Continent, we will discuss the news and tell the story of each country’s preparation for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023.

General

The Eurovision 2023 slogan and Eurovision 2023 logo were revealed this week: “United By Music.
The logo is composed of the colors yellow, blue, pink and purple. Inspired by the Ukrainian and United Kingdom flags, the colours used are designed to reflect the joy and diversity of the contest.

On Tuesday, the semi-final allocation draw was held:

This is when the automatic qualifiers will vote:

Armenia has chosen internally for Eurovision 2023: The singer Brunette will probably release her song in March 2023

Teya and Salena will represent Austria at Eurovision 2023.
Their upbeat pop song will be revealed on the 8th of March 2023.

Azerbaijani broadcaster Ictimai TV is towards the end of internal selection for Eurovision 2023.

The grand final will be held on Saturday, the 11th of February 2023
The first round of the final will be determined by a 50% public vote and a 50% international jury.
Top 3 artists will advance to the super-final, where the winner will be chosen by the public only.

Iru Khechanovi will represent Georgia at Eurovision 2023, following her win in “The Voice of Georgia 2023″.

Her song for Eurovision 2023 will be selected intermally.
Probably with the involvement of Giorgi Kukhianidze, who stands behind the majority of Georgia songs for Junior Eurovision.

Iru Khechanovi co-wrote the Georgian song for Junior Eurovision 2022, and she won Junior Eurovision 2011 as part of a group

16 year old Victor Vernikos has been internally to represent Greece at Eurovision 2023. He will perform his self-panned song “What They Say

The song is expected to be released in March.

Last Saturday, the Icelandic broadcaster released the song for “Söngvakeppnin 2023“:

As always, the results of the festival will be determined by:

  • Public voting (SMS and televoting)
  • The professional jury comprises 150 journalists from the web, radio, print, TV, and press room.
  • Demoscopic jury – composed of 300 people.
  • In the first 2 nights, the professional jury will vote. It will carry out its vote by dividing itself into three independent components: a third for TV and print media, a third for the radio, and a third for the web jury.
  • On the 3rd night, the vote will be composed of 50% of the public voting and 50% for the Demoscopic jury
  • The 4th night of the festival will be dedicated for covers for Italian and International songs which have been released between 1st of January 1960 and 31st of December 1999.
  • On the last 2 nights, the voting will be divided into three parts: 34% for the public voting, 33% for the professional jury, and 33% for the Demoscopic jury.
  • 5 artists will qualify for the super-final. In the second round, the results will be determined by a combination of jury and public vote

Some changes in “Una Voce Per San Marino 2023” announced:

  • The number of semi-finalists increased from 60 to 80.
  • Each artist will perform one unreleased song in the semi-finals
  • 5 semi-finals (4 semi-finals and a second chance semi-final) will be broadcast between 18th and 20th of February 2023 (not live).
  • The final will be held on the 25th of February 2023.

Slovenian broadcaster RTV SLO has revealed that the band Joker Out will perform the song “Carpe Diem” at Eurovision 2023.
The song will be released tonight (Saturday)

The song is said to be performed in the Slovenian language. It will be an upbeat rock song.
The song includes an instrumental section as well.
Carpe Diem is a Latin phrase translated as “Seize the Day“.
It urges someone to make the most of the present time and give little thought to the future.
The live performance of the song will be broadcast at Misja Liverpool” (Eng: Mission Liverpool)

The UK has shortlisted 4 artists to represent the country at Eurovision 2023

According to the mentioned source, there are 4 potential artists to represent the UK in Liverpool.
Some of them are quite established and have already made a great career.

Following the fact that men represented the UK in the years 2019-2022, it seems that the chance for women is greater this year:

should, perhaps, not have a guy

Ben Mawson, TaP Music‘s project manager, reacted:

We’re down to four acts, in varying forms of establishment.
What defines a Brit is fairly open – there’s a broad multicultural population.

Therefore, we can conclude that the UK might be represented by a female singer, female band/duo, a non binary artist, or even a non British artist!
