Mustii – Before The Party’s Over

So far, he has released 2 successful albums.
In 2018, he released his debut album, “21st Century Boy“.

Both albums peaked in the top 5 of the local charts.

He has participated in films and productions in French TV as well.
He was a judge at “Drag Race Belgique”, where he will also be next season.
On the 30th of August 2023, RTBF (French-speaking national broadcaster) revealed that Mustii was internally selected to represent the country at Eurovision 2024.

He will perform the song “Before The Party’s Over“:

Allocation in Semi-Final

Belgium will perform in the 2nd half of semi-final 2 at Eurovision 2024.
Belgium was allocated to perform in the 12th position, after Georgia (11st) and before Estonia (13th)

Musical Review

  • It is a mid-tempo pop ballad.
  • The song starts with electric keyboards playing. The first verse is based on keyboards playing and slow drum playing. The second half of this verse is a bit more upbeat.
  • The first pre-chorus is based on a slightly faster beat. He sings it with a warmer tone of voice and a mid-high tone of voice. The melody is based on keyboards, guitar and drums. We can hear a bit of backing vocals.
  • The second verse is based on a fragmated drum beat in a higher tempo. The melody sounds more classic, due to piano presence.
  • The second pre-chorus is more powerful. The melody is based on piano, bass and drums. He sings this part with some long notes and a higher tone of voice. We can also hear some orchestral elements in the composition
  • The chorus is based on monotonous dramatic piano playing. He starts singing it calmly. But later on, he moves to a more emotional and powerful singing, almost outcrying his soul out. This part features choir singing of the secondary text. The melody is based on string orchestral elements and piano playing. The chorus repeats several times.
  • The song ends with bass and drums outro.
  • Overall, it is a very emotional and dramatic song with a cinematic atmosphere. Mustii shows a wide range of vocal abilities.
  • Production builds it up slowly until peak point.
  • I think the chorus comes too late, but overall the message is delivered convincingly.
  • My main concern here is the staging. I don’t want to see him move too much on stage. I think the staging should be minimalistic, utilizing lights and LED screens.
  • With the right performance, it might do really well with the jury

Lyrics

All we chase is shining in the moonlight
Are we sure the kids are alright
Or just playing it cool?

Watch it fade
It’s gonna hurt from time to time
One more drink and I’ll be fine
You’re the living proof

Are you still playing the game
Or breaking the rules?
I can see all the pain
In the way that you move

Face to face
They told us it was paradise
But I’ll barely make it through the night
Do you think about it too?

Are you still playing the game
Or breaking the rules?
I can see all the pain
In the way that you move
In the way that you move

I got a soul on fire
I’m gonna make moves tonight
I got a soul on fire
I’m gonna raise roofs tonight

Before the party is over
Before the party is over
Before the party is over
Before the party is over

Poetry Analysis

The song talks about living life to its fullest, living the moment and being able to defeat any struggles.
The title already raises the main point: One should be aware to live its life before it is too late.
The first verse calls for introspection. The things we chase will disappear at the end of the day.
“The kids” are a metaphor for our inner child, that represents our dreams.
Watching life and our dreams fading might hurt, some people might find solutions in addictions like alcohol.
The spokesperson asks the addressee whether he/she still lives life by the rules (social norms) or whether he/she broke the rules. The pain of denying our true desires might reflect in our motion and appearance.
As time goes by, it becomes clear that life isn’t paradise, one can feel cheated by this belief.
The “soul of fire” represents the passion and urge to live life by our choice. Making the moves relates to doing the required steps. This will also allow raising roofs, which means crossing the threshold and daring to act.

Initial Personal Ranking

2nd in semi-final 1, 3rd overall

The impact of the allocation in semi-final 2

Among the countries that usually vote for Belgium, 4 countries will vote in semi-final 2:The Netherlands, France, Estonia and Denmark

Betting Odds

The song was released on the 20th of February 2024.
Between the 20th of February and the 7th of April, Belgium has been ranked 4th-6th with the bookies.
Ever since then, Belgium has been mostly around the 8th and 9th place.

Early Prediction

This one will really depend on the live execution. The video clip is promising and the song itself is of high quality. However, I am worried that live performance might push too much. In the pre-party, he was too intense with limb moves.
I think the jury will love it and they can finish in the top 5 in their voting (if the live performance is decent). However, at the same time it can also be a surprising flop.
Focusing on the bright side, I will predict Belgium will end in 5-11 place.

Aiko – Pedestal

She will perform the song “Pedestal“:

Allocation in Semi-Final

Czechia will perform in the first half of semi-final 2 at Eurovision 2024.
Czechia was allocated to perform in the 5th position, after Switzerland (4th) and before France (automatic qualifier) and Austria (6th)

Musical Review

  • It is a pop rock song.
  • The song opens with a beat that is built on a sped-up electronic guitar beat. Thereafter, Aiko starts singing with a quite soft voice that stands in contrast to the beat of the song.
  • The first verse is mainly based on drums and beat.
  • The pre-chorus is faster and repeats in several words. The chorus is more self-empowerment/stadium rock piece. The chorus combines gentle shouts and cheerful singing.
  • The second verse is faster. The melody is still based on drums and beast, but we can hear more elements of bass stringing.
  • The second chorus comes pretty fast. It is powerful and energetic, based mainly on guitar riffs.
  • The outro includes pre-recoded “arguments” which increase the level of intensity. This part is followed by an instrumental part which is composed of electric guitar and electro beat. She whispers the following lyrics, and later on it is empowered by a high volume of rock singing.
  • The final part is cyclic, we can hear the chorus again, this time with a short instrumental part composed of bass and electric guitar.
  • The song is a good throwback to the female rock era that was mainly popular in the last 1990’s. The performance must by sharp, was well vocally delivered. I would like to see Aiko not moving that much on stage, just to keep her voice stable.

Lyrics

Your sorry means nothin’ when everythin’ else
Stays the same, stays the same
You stay silent, I get violent
And everythin’ else stays the same
Pathetic and I’m over it
You’re so full of it, full of it
I’ll give all the love to me
And then I’ll truly be free, I’ll truly be free

And I, I, I, I need to learn to
I, I, I, I need to learn to
Put myself on a pedestal

I will be loving me more, loving me
Put myself on a pedestal
I will be loving me more
I finally learned not to force things
And I love me more, love me more, love me more
Love me more than you once did
Put myself on a pedestal
I will be loving me more (Loving me more)

Love of your life, just please don’t ask
For any actions or any proof
Ugh, the irony, where did my pride go?
I feel no shame, but you should and now I know

I, I, I, I need to learn to
I, I, I, I need to learn to
Put myself on a pedestal

I will be loving me more, loving me
Put myself on a pedestal
I will be loving me more
I finally learned not to force things
And I love me more, love me more, love me more
Love me more than you once did
Put myself on a pedestal
I will be loving me more (Loving me—)

I told you like a million times
Why do you keep doing the same thing?
I’m not doin’ it, I’m not doing it, I told you
You are… Stop, please, where are you goin’?
I’m not doing it, I’m off, I’m done

I will be loving me more
Loving me, loving me, loving me
Loving me, loving me, loving me
I will be loving me more

Poetry Analysis

The song talks about self-love, personal empowerment, and the end of a relationship.|
The first verse spans the story: The spokesperson is disappointed of someone, who has apologized many times, but has never changed his behavior.
Giving him another chance feels pathetic, and she had enough of this.
She suggested transferring this love to self love – a thing that she has lacked recently.
However, it will take her sometime, as she isn’t used to it. She also sees this as a “compensation” post her last relationship. She was honest about the relationship, saying it was forced.
She felt ashamed, as her former lover didn’t express his love in any action.
The outtro suggests a piece of their argument, and it shows us what she has been going through.
The song encourages us to set boundaries over unhealthy relationships

Initial Personal Ranking

6th in semi-final 1, 13th overall

The impact of the allocation in semi-final 2

Among the countries that usually vote for Czechia, 5 countries will vote in semi-final 2: Israel, Spain, Belgium, Austria, and Estonia

Betting Odds

The song was selected as the Czech song for Eurovision 2024 on the 13th of December 2023.
Czechia has been ranked 29th in the first few days. Later on, until the 8th of April, Czechia was in the bottom 5 (33rd-37th place).
Even since the 9th of April, Czechia went up to the 19th-32nd place.

Early Prediction

Czechia brings a powerful female pop-rock anthem, which we haven’t received at Eurovision for years. However, qualifying will be a very challenging task, especially regarding the competitive acts in semi-final 2.
Therefore, I predict Czechia will most likely not qualify for the final.
However, if a miracle happens (I wish for!), Czechia will end around 18-26 in the final.

Eden Golan – Hurricane

Eden Golan is a 20 year-old Israeli singer. She was born in Israel to a Latvian Jewish father and Ukrainian Jewish mother. At the of 6, the family had to relocate to Moscow, due to Eden’s father’s work. The family has stayed there for 12 years. Eden started to push her music career as a teenager. In 2015, she competed in the Russian selection for Junior Eurovision 2015. She finished 5th in the final. In 2016, she took part in the “New Wave” contest.
In 2018, she participated in “The Voice Kids Russia”.
In 2022, the family moved back to Israel.
In 2024, Eden Golan won “The Rising Star For Eurovision 2024”, where she broke a record with a score of 100% for her first live audition.
Therefore, Eden was internally selected to represent Israel at Eurovision 2024, while the song has been chosen internally.
So far, the singer has released 6 singles since 2015.

She will perform the song “Hurricane“:

Allocation in Semi-Final

Israel will perform in the 2nd half of semi-final 2 at Eurovision 2024.
Israel was allocated to perform in the 14th position, after Estonia (13th) and Italy (automatic qualifier) and before Norway (15th)

Musical Review

  • It is an emotional ballad.
  • The song opens with heavy breaths and the sound of dripping water.
  • The first verse starts with piano playing and Eden singing. She sings in a mid-low tone of voice, the piano accords are quite classic, and she emphasizes the last word in each line by using a chest voice.
  • The first pre-chorus is quite short, she sings it with a slightly higher tone of voice. This time the emphasis is on her voice, while the melody is more “hidden”, but still based on piano. She finalized with some vocal decorations.
  • The first chorus starts with a bolder piano playing, Eden sings with an angelic voice. She uses longer notes. The hurricane effects from the intro are features in the chorus as well. In the end of the chorus, the effects are gone, and the melody is based on acoustic guitar playing and simple keyboards playing. The dripping water is brought back.
  • The second verse is based on a mid-tempo beat, alongside piano playing. This part sounds more contemporary and radio-friendly.
  • The second pre-chorus comes immediately after, the beat is served with higher tempo, and we can hear some string-based elements.
  • The second chorus starts with drum playing. The tempo is higher compared to the first chorus. Eden’s singing is more soulful. The melody features keyboards and a constant beat.
  • It continues with the bridge. Eden opens with a very impressive head voice singing, featuring a high pitch long note. The melody is more dramatic, featuring piano and orchestral elements.
  • The song ends unplugged, with acoustic guitar playing and singing in Hebrew. Her voice is pure and she touches the listener.
  • Overall, this is a very emotional and well-made ballad, with international radio-friendly appeal. Eden is one of the strongest vocalists this year, and she adds a lot to this song. The text is meaningful and serves as a global message.

Translated Lyrics

Writer of my symphony, play with me
Look into my eyes and see
People walk away but never say goodbye
Someone stole the moon tonight, took my light
Everything is black and white
Who’s the fool who told you boys don’t cry

Hours and hours and powers
Life is no game but it’s ours
While the time goes wild

Every day I’m losing my mind
Holding on in this mysterious ride
Dancing in the storm, I got nothing to hide
Take it all and leave the world behind
Baby, promise me you’ll hold me again
I’m still broken from this hurricane
This hurricane

Living in a fantasy, ecstasy
Everything is meant to be
We shall pass but love will never die

Hours and hours and powers
Life is no game but it’s ours
While the time goes wild

Every day I’m losing my mind
Holding on in this mysterious ride
Dancing in the storm, I got nothing to hide
Take it all and leave the world behind
Baby, promise me you’ll hold me again
I’m still broken from this hurricane
This hurricane

This hurricane

No need for big words, only prayers
Even if it’s hard to see
You will always leave me one little light

Poetry Analysis

The song talks about a woman who tries to recover from a crisis. The general story is kind of hidden and it allows the listener/the reader to take the story to his/her own place.
Hurricane is used as a metaphor for the aftermath of a crisis.
The song starts with asking of a sense of identification. The spokesperson stating that someone stole the moon tonight and took her light – This represents the sudden of when this crisis has started. She feels insecure and unsafe. The “boys don’t cry” metaphor represents the fact that everybody can feel broken and is allowed to express his feeling.
Pre-chorus exposes the complexity of trying to get out of the conflict.
The chorus is focused on the storm, which has 2 faces: The inner one which represents the challenges and thoughts, while the external ones represent the struggle to carry the everyday life.
Dancing in the storm relates to being free to expose your conflict, but also to finding hopeful moments amid the darkness and despair. She is asking for someone close to keep her safe and sane, trying to recover from what she has been through.
The second verse is more optimistic, while we might cope with challenging days, we should focus on passing love and healing each other.
The last part suggests a more personal point of view, she asks to focus on prayers and she sees the little light everyone has inside him/her.

Initial Personal Ranking

1st in semi-final 1, 2nd overall

The impact of the allocation in semi-final 2

Among the countries that usually vote for Israel, 7 countries will vote in semi-final 2: France, The Netherlands, Armenia, Austria, Czechia, Switzerland, and Spain

Betting Odds

The song was released on the 10th of March 2024.
Israel moved in a range of 7-9 place in the final, mostly around 8th place.

Early Prediction

The prediction will really depend on whether people will judge it as a song, or on whether external factors like politics will be blended in.
The song itself has a greater jury appeal, but it is also a question (as some jury might rank it low, due to political views).
In addition, we have to recall that there are no negative votes, so those who are against Israel’s participation can’t precent votes pro the song.
There are 2 big advantages related to this act: Eden is one of the greatest vocalists this year. In addition, there are only a few ballads in the line-up this year, so the song will stand out.
I predict Israel will qualify for the final, and will end around 5-12 in the final

Dons – Hollow

Artūrs Šingirejs (better known as Dons) is a 40 year-old Latvian singer-songwriter. He is one of the most popular singer in Latia, winning Latvian music awards for 8 times.
So far, the singer has released 8 studio albums.
Dons has tried to represent Latvia twice in the past, when he participated in the national selection in 2010 (2nd place) with “My Religion is Freedom” and 2014 (2nd place) with “Pēdējā vēstule”.

In 2024, he won “Supernova 2024“, where 15 artists competed to represent Latvia at Eurovision 2024.

He will perform the song “Hollow“:

Allocation in Semi-Final

Latvia will perform in the 3nd half of semi-final 2 at Eurovision 2024.
Latvia was allocated to perform in the 9th position, after Armenia (8th) and before Spain (automatic qualifier) and San Marino (10th)

Musical Review

  • It is a lyrical ballad with influences of soft rock.
  • The song starts with piano playing.
  • The first verse relies on simple piano playing, while Dons sings with his deep and crystal clear voice. His warm voice wraps the melody. In parallel, we can hear a secondary soft beat that accompanies the melody.
  • The pre-chorus continues in the same line, it is slightly faster and he sings it with some manners.
  • The chorus is powerful. Dons sings painfully and emotionally. The melody is based on electric guitar stringing which is alligend to Dons’ raspy voice. His voice sounds thicker in this part.
  • The second verse is based on piano and slow drum beat. Later on, we can hear violions featuring in the melody, making it more classic.
  • The second chorus is more epic, the melody also includes orchestral elements and features backing vocals singing. The track gives it an atmosphere of “Rag’n’Bone” music.
  • The bridge brings up the main part of the chorus, where the backing vocals are the main part.
  • The outro is minimaliatic. He sings with a voice that is close to tears, with a piano in the background
  • In my opinion, it is one of the best songs in this Eurovision season, and especially as a ballad. The text is meaningful, and the message is well conveyed to the listeners.

Lyrics

Don’t look now
Woah, you’ll see me crying rivers, I might drown
Don’t know how
Woah-oh, will I ever find my own way out?

I don’t wanna lose me so cruelly
I’m driftin’ in and out of who I am
So help me understand

It’s killin’ me slow
Try to make me just another believer
Everybody just pretending they’re preachers, preachers
It’s killin’ me slow
Yeah, I’d rather let them dig my grave shallow
Instead of sellin’ out to something so hollow, hollow

Not afraid
Woah, to tell you all my sins I can’t escape
I won’t change
Woah, it’s like a bad disease that I can’t shake

I don’t wanna lose me so cruelly
I’m driftin’ in and out of who I am
So help me understand

It’s killin’ me slow
Try to make me just another believer
Everybody just pretending they’re preachers, preachers
It’s killin’ me slow
Yeah, I’d rather let them dig my grave shallow
Instead of sellin’ out to something so hollow, hollow

Hollow, hollow
(Instead of sellin’ out to something so hollow)
Hollow, hollow

It’s killin’ me slow
Yeah, I’d rather let them dig my grave shallow
Instead of sellin’ out to something so hollow

Poetry Analysis

The song talks about the insecurities one might have when dealing with living his life not according to social norms. The spokesperson cries at the beginning of the song, indicating he must find a way out of something.
He is afraid of losing his own identity, surrendering to other’s advice.
In the chorus, he resists being affected by societal expectations. He sees the ones who tell him how to live his life as preachers. Using the metaphor of “dig my grave shallow,” he emphasized the mockery of superficiality, rather preferring to stay loyal to himself.
He is determined to keep defending his actions, being honest about mistakes he has made. He acknowledges this cycle of life, rather than hiding behind a fake character.

Initial Personal Ranking

3rd in semi-final 1, 5th overall

The impact of the allocation in semi-final 2

Among the countries that usually vote for Latvia, 5 countries will vote in semi-final 2:Estonia, Georgia, the UK, Malta and San Marino.

Betting Odds

The song was selected as the Latvian entry for Eurovision 2024 on the 10th of February.
Between the 10th of February and 27th of March, Latvia has been ranked in the 27th-31st place. Later on, Latvia was 25th and 26th at odds.
Ever since then on the 30th of March, Latvia has moved within the range of 21st-24th place.

Early Prediction

Latvia brought a very touching personal ballad this year, served by a warm-voiced singer. However, it feels like the song didn’t create the expected hype in the public.
It is a song that might do really well with the jury, but sadly we don’t have them in the semi-finals.
Therefore, I will unfortunately predict that Latvia won’t qualify for the final

Joost Klein – Europapa

Joost Klein is a 26 Dutch singer, musician, rapper and former YouTuber.
So far, he has released 8 studio albums, 2 of them topped the Dutch charts.
At the age of 12, he lost his father to cancer. A year later, he lost his mother to cardiac arrest. Thereafter, he was looked after by his older brother and sister.
His genre is mostly Hip-hop, electronic, indie rock and Gabber.

In 2024, he was internally selected to represent The Netherlands at Eurovision 2024.

He will perform the song “Europapapa”:

Allocation in Semi-Final

The Netherlands will perform in the 2nd half of semi-final 2 at Eurovision 2024.
The Netherlands was allocated to perform in the 16th (last) position, after Norway (15th)

Musical Review

  • It is a techno hip-hop song with influences of the Gabber genre (which was born in the 1990’s in The Netherlands).
  • The song starts with hyper-keyboards playing, and some pre-recorded backing vocals. This part is sampled with some string elements. Later on, we can hear a growing drum beat added to the composition.
  • The first verse’s melody is faster, it is a piece of hyper techno music with electronic beats. Joost recites this part with a lower tone of voice
  • The second verse is similar, but this time the beat is at a higher speed.
  • The chorus repeats, this time he is backed up with some backing vocals. The last part is served with some studio effects over the vocals.
  • The third verse is faster, and this time it is based on synth/string elements with electronic keyboards. Singing is more of a rap, and the beats are denser. Later on, the main beats are gone, and you can mainly hear the electronic keyboards.
  • The following chorus starts with bass, drums and keyboards playing. Thereafter, we get a eurodance DJing part, with a sample of pre-recorded vocals and electronic loop. This is followed by the traditional dutch Gabber part, with speedy electro-techno beat.
  • The song ends very emotionally with Joost’s speech to his dead father. The melody is based on simple keyboards playing.
  • Overall, it is a song that might do really well with the public vote. It will make people dance and celebrate. There’s a kind of contrast between the hyper-techno uplifting beats and the painful text.

Translated Lyrics

Europe, let’s come together (Europapa, Europapa)
It’s now or never
I love you all (Europapa, Europapa)

Welcome to Europe
Stay here ’till I die
Europapa, Europapa

Welcome to Europe
Stay here ’till I die
Europapa, Europapa

Visit my friends in France
Or run off to Vienna
I want to leave the Netherlands
But my passport disappeared

Fortunately don’t need a visum
To be with you
So take the bus to Poland
Or the train to Berlin

I have no money for Paris
So use my fantasy
Do you have a euro please
Say “thank you” and “please”

I’ve truly lost everything
Except the time
So travel every day
Because the world is mine

Welcome to Europe
Stay here ’till I die
Europapa, Europapa

Welcome to Europe
Stay here ’till I die
Europapa, Europapa

Europapa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
Europapa-pa (Hey)
Europapa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
Europa (Hey)

I am in Germany
But I am so alone
I am in Italy
But still it hurts

Am running from myself
Cry the entire day for “help”
Yes I even give people money
But no one’s helping me

I don’t need escargots
Don’t need fish ‘n chips
Don’t need paella, no
I don’t even really know what that is

Turn on the radio
I hear Stromae with “Papaoutai”
Won’t stop until they say
“Yes, yes, he’s doing that so well, ey”

Welcome to Europe
Stay here ’till I die
Europapa, Europapa

Welcome to Europe
Stay here ’till I die
Europapa, Europapa

Europapa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
Europapa-pa (Hey)
Europapa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
Europa

Europapa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pa
Welcome to Europe, dude (Hey)
Europe

At the end of the day
We’re all humans
My father once said to me
It’s a world without borders

I miss you every day
Is what I secretly whisper
See, dad
I listened to you

Poetry Analysis

The song is a tribute to Joost’s father and spans themes like self exploration.
The spokesperson tries to find himself and share his personal story. He is still not sure about his identity, but his passion to know people and telling his story is bigger.
When travelling through different cities all over Europe, he reveals his complex emotions: It starts with welcome bless which already reminds him of death. He wants to be surrounded by his friends. It seems like he has the urge to run away from his fate (“I want to leave the Netherlands/ But my passport disappeared”). Later on, he clarifies that he needs some money to continue his long journey. The only thing he still has is time, which is given to everyone equally. He tries to run away from his problems, but his loneliness and pain will never be gone.
He doesn’t ask for mercy, but he is looking forward to having his problems solved.
The song ends by remembering his father and his message of unity, a world with no boundaries.
The song focuses on the power of self recognition, storytelling and the universal message of connection.

Initial Personal Ranking

13th in semi-final 1, 27th overall

The impact of the allocation in semi-final 2

Among the countries that usually vote for The Netherlands, 7 countries will vote in semi-final 2:Belgium, Denmark, San Marino, Austria, Malta, Switzerland, Israel

Betting Odds

The song was released on the 29th of February 2024.
It started from the 21st place, and then went up to the 18th and the 13th place.
Between the 4th and 27th of March,The Netherlands went up to the 5th and 6th place.
Between the 28th of March and the 18th of April, the country has been 4th and 5th with bookies.
Since the 19th of April, The Netherlands is in the 3rd place.

Early Prediction

The Netherlands sent a televote-magnet this year. The song leads the streaming charts, and it goes viral as well.
The staging is said to be engaging, with some interesting props.
I believe the Netherlands will do well with the public, not sure about the jury.
My prediction is 1-7 place in the final, it will depend on the jury/public gap.

In the next episode, we will review the 6 automatic qualifiers: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and Sweden.
