As every year, different countries and people who follow the Eurovision Song Contest raise questions regarding the rules and regulations of the contest.
The music industry keeps on changing from time to time and those developments are reflected in the different countries efforts to select an Eurovision entry.
Part of these changes include wider use of studio effects, as well as the use of A.I to create songs.
While some rules are known and clear for years (The maximal song duration is 3 minutes, no more than 6 people are allowed on the stage), other might be left in the gray area.

One of the hottest topics is the use of auto-tune. The effect (which is used the music industry for more than 20 years) has the abilities to fix the performer pitch, so the singer will always his the right note, even in real time.
Norwegian broadcaster NRK has openly supported the use of auto-tone, as the effect is allowed to use in the national selection “Melodi Grand Prix” in the recent years.
This year, there are several songs in the “Melodi Grand Prix” featuring the effect.

Norwegian channel TV2 has directedly approached the EBU, asking for official directives regarding the use of auto-tone.
Here are the main points obtained from the EBU’s respones:
- The competing songs must be performed iive, without any manipulation.
- Live singing is one of the main aspects that comes when assessing a song, both by the public and by the jury.
- For the goal of correcting the notes, auto-tune won’t be allowed. This holds for both the lead singer and choir. However, auto-tune will be allowed if it is used as a sound effect in a limited part of the song.
In general, we can see a more flexible approach from the EBU. However, live singing will still play a significant role in delivering a convincing performance that will appeal for both the public and the jury.
What do you think about the EBU’s decision?
Will we encounter an even more flexible approach in the coming years?
Do you feel the use of such effected should be allowed or prohibited?
