“Around The Continent” is a series of posts where we will give you all the main news of the week. This is the first post of the series that will symbolize the beginning of the Eurovision 2021 season. Therefore it will be longer than usual.

The first national selection every year will be held on December 2020 in order to choose the artist and the song for Eurovision 2021 – “Festivali i Këngës 59”.
26 artists will participate in this year national selection:

The songs will probably be published in 2 weeks. The selection will include 2 semi-finals and a grand final. The grand final will be held on a day between the 17th-26th of December 2020 , depending on the weather and Covid-19 conditions.
According to the Covid- 19 restrictions, the festival may take place in the open air: “Sheshi Italia” (“The Italian square) in Tirana.
Moreover, the jury panel that chose the 26 acts included 5 people, including 2 former Eurovision artists: Eugent Bushpepa and Jonida Maliqi.
This year, the whole jury panel in the show will be Albanian.
The broadcaster is planning 2 music scenario: Unplugged or with Orchestra.
The shows will be hosted by Bledi Salaj and Jonida Vokshi.
The Armenian broadcaster AMPTV confirmed participation at Eurovision 2021, but the mechanism of selection hasn’t been mentioned. However, the broadcaster decided to withdraw from Junior Eurovision 2020. due to the introduction of martial law in the region as a result of the ongoing conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh).
Therefore, we can expect that Armenia won’t hold a national selection this year. we may infer that the chances of selecting Athena (or any other artist) internally are high.
SBS, the Australian broadcaster has confirmed that Montaigne will represent the country at Eurovision 2021. The singer raveled some details about her song for Eurovision 2021. We know that the name of the song is “JC Ultra!“. The song was named following the project MK-Ultra.
Nevertheless, we will emphasize that the final song for Montaigne will be determined not only by the singer herself, but also by the broadcaster.

The Austrian broadcaster ORF has internally chosen the intended artist for Eurovision 2020, to represent the country at Eurovision 2021 – Vincent Bueno
The Azeri broadcaster has internally chosen the intended artist for Eurovision 2020, to represent the country at Eurovision 2021 – Efendi
The Belarusian broadcaster BTRC decided to chose a new artist for Eurovision 2021. The main reason for the decision may be that the duo VAL took part in the protests against the president.

Traditionally, the country chose their act for Eurovision via a national selection, which may be held in 2021 as well.
The intended artists for Eurovision 2020: Hooverphonic band were internally chosen to represent their home country at Eurovision 2021.
Alex Callier, one of the members of the band hinted that they might come up with a uplifting song for Eurovision 2021.
The Bulgarian broadcaster BNT has chosen internally the singer Victoria Georgieva (who should have represented the country at Eurovision 2020) to represent the country at Eurovision 2021.
In August 2020, BNT held a special Eurovision songs writing camp called “The Black Sea Eurovision Songwriting Camp“.However, not only Victoria presented in the camp, but also other Eurovision artists , such as Ben Dolic (Germany 2020) and Gjon Tears (Switzerland 2020+2021).
Several composer and writes attended the camp, such as Cesár Sampson (Austria 2018), Borsilav Milanov (the writer behind the following Eurovision acts: Bulgaria 2020, Malta 2020, Germany 2020, North Macedonia 2017, Austria 2018, Malta 2019, Azerbaijan 2019 and more).

The Bulgarian song will be reveled only in March 2021.
Croatia will chose their act for Eurovision 2021 via the “Dora 2021” festival.
The number of competing acts will reduce from 16 to only 14. While 4 additional acts will be defines as “back-up” songs (with other artists). The backup acts will be relevant only if an artist will withdraw before the rehearsals.
The national selection will include only one show that will be held on the 13th of February 2020.
HRT will prepare 4 versions of the festival, as does the Eurovision Song Contest, and the selection of Croatian songs and representatives for the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest will certainly take place, but according to which scenario, it depends on the situation with the Covid- 19 in February 2021.

The Czech Republic chose internally the singer Benny Cristo to represent them at Eurovision 2021, following his winning at the national final for Eurovision 2020.
As usual, Denmark will chose their act for Eurovision 2021 via “Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2021”.
As you may recall, the national selection in 2020 was held without audience due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The show this year will probably be held without audience as well.
8 songs will be included in the final line-up of the national selection.
The show will be held on Saturday, March 6th, 2021.
Estonia will choose their act for Eurovision 2021 via the “Eesti Laul 2021“.
The submission window for the competition was closed yesterday (the 6th of November 2020).
156 songs were submitted this year!
Tomi Rahula commented that this year the song selection is very colorful. Many different music genres are represented.
A professional jury panel will select their 23 favorites songs, without being told who is the artist, composer and writer behind them.
One spot in the semi-finals has already been kept for Uku Suviste who should have represented Estonia at Eurovision 2020 with the song “What Love Is“.
The semi-finals of Eesti Laul 2021 will take place on February 18th and 20th, the final on March 6th, 2021.
The songs will probably be revealed on the 5th of December 2020.
Like in last year, each artist (singer, writer or composer) can submit up to 5 songs. Songs in the language of Estonian have a participation fee of €50, while foreign language act (English, Russian, Italian and etc.) have a participation fee of €150.

Finland will choose their artist and song for Eurovision 2021 via “UMK 2021“.
The Finnish broadcaster YLE have received 278 songs this year.
UMK professional jury led by Yle‘s music manager Tapio Hakanen, chose the 7 songs that will be included in the line-up of “UMK 2021”. At the moment, we know that the line-up is predictable to be diverse in a sense of music genres.
The 7 lucky artists will be revealed on Tuesday the 19th of January 2021.
The grand final of “UMK 2021” (and actually the only show of the national selction) will be held on the 20th of February 2021.
In 2021, it will be the 10th edition of the wonderful national selection “UMK“. To celebrate it, YLE decided asking a special design for the winner’s trophy.

Unlike in 2020, France will choose the act for Eurovision 2020 via a national selection with a new format that hasn’t been revealed yet.
At Eurovision 2021, Georgia will be represented by Tornike Kipiani who should have represented the country at Eurovision 2020. It is more likely that his song will be selected internally.
Alexandra Wolfslast, the head of the German delegation has confirmed that Germany will use an internal selection for Eurovision 2021.
The format of selection will be identical to the format of the former year: 2 jury panels will determine which act will be chosen for Germany at Eurovision 2021. The first panel consists of 100 Eurovision fans that are considered to be successful predictors of Eurovision results. The second panel will consist of 20 international music experts who were Eurovision representatives of Eurovision jurors before.
As we all know, the young singer Stefania Liberakakis has been selected to represent Greece at Eurovision 2020.
Following the cancellation of Eurovision 2020, the broadcaster ERT have decided to internally select the singer for Eurovision 2021.
Stefania has been working on the wishful song for Eurovision 2021 with the “Dream Team” (Dimitris Kontopoulos, and Ilias Kokotos) and ARCADE team
The group was responsible for writing and composing 5 potential songs for Greece at Eurovision 2021, all are performed by Stefania. The final production of the songs will be finished in a few days. Stefania and the whole group behind her have a favorite song among the 5 .However, the act for Eurovision 2021 will be determined by the broadcaster ERT after consulting with Stefania and the team behind her.
Daði Freyr and Gagnamagnið were internally selected to represent Iceland at Eurovision 2021, after they has won the national selection for Eurovision 2020 with the song “Think About Things”.
It’s the first time that Iceland decided to cancel the traditional national selection “Söngvakeppnin” since the year 2005, when Selma internally selected to represented the country.
The Irish broadcaster is quite discrete about Eurovision 2021 selection process.
Lesley is interested in representing her country in Eurovision 2021 and therefore she is looking for a ‘banger” – a song that will amaze the listeners.
She stayed at Stockholm , the capital city of Sweden. The singer- song writer collaborate with several musician in order to write the “right” song.
She had a Zoom conversion with Norwegian producer Jowst (Norway, Eurovision 2017) and Lasse Piirainen (Finland Eurovision 2017)
She has also met Niklas Jarl, who was the writer behind Ireland’s entry for Eurovision 2012- “Waterline”
Another main player is Erik Dahlqvist who wrote “Bulletproof” for Dotter (Sweden, Melodifestivalen 2020)
But we haven’t seen it all, Lesley is planning to meet other Eurovision writers and producers in the near future!
As we all know, Eden Alene will represent Israel at Eurovision 2021, after Eurovision 2020 has been cancelled due to the Covid 19 pandemic.
Eden should have sung the song “Feker Libi
The Israeli broadcaster KAN published the details for the following national selection.
Lyricists and composers were invited to send their entries until the 5th of October 2020.
The lyricists and composers must have Israeli citizenship. The song can be in any language (English, Hebrew and etc.)
Until the end of deadline, the broadcaster have got 220 songs.
Professional jury will pick 16 among the submitted songs. In November, the 16 selected songs will be uploaded to the broadcaster’s website. The Israeli public will have the ability to vote for their favorites entries. 4 songs will be selected by the public, while 4 other songs will chosen by the professional jury.
Thereafter, the 8 selected songs will be allocated into 2 semi-finals. Each semi-final will include 4 songs but only 2 among them will qualify from each semi-final for the final.
In the semi-finals, the songs will be performed by the writers/composers of the song or by another singers (that are not Eden Alene).
Eden will perform the Top 4 songs in the final.
The national final will be aired until the middle of February 2021.
An unofficial source claims that the professional jury weren’t satisfied with the level of the songs, and therefore the broadcaster appointed to successful writes and composers in aim to get additional (and hopefully better songs). Those famous composers and writers have got a postponing regarding the original deadline.
Italy will select their act for Eurovision 2021 via the traditional music festival “Sanremo 2021”.
Generally, the festival is being held at the first week of February.
The new dates have been chosen and mentioned that Sanremo Festival 2021 is currently scheduled for Tuesday 2nd to Saturday 6th for March 2021. that of course depends on the situation practicability and regulations. More to say, the festival formula will have no changes and will keep its essence values. “The festival is the triumph of Italian music, the only real occasion during the year to stop the whole national with new music” as quoted by the festival leaders
The Italian broadcaster will decide in January 2021 whether the festival will include live audience or not
Another things officially confirmed is that the Italian TV and Radio presenter Amedeo Sebastiani will be once again involved in the show’s as the artistic director and will be its host too.
The Latvian broadcaster LTV has chosen internally the singer Samanta Tina to represent the country at Eurovision 2021. The singer won the national final in 2020 with the song “Still Breathing”
The national broadcaster LTV decided to internally select the singer for Eurovision 2021.
On the 14th and 15th of October 2020, Riga Live company organised a special songwriting camp. The camp occurred in order to find the wishful song for Latvia at Eurovision 2021.

LRT (The Lithuanian national broadcster) published information about their plans for Eurovision 2021.
As we all remember, in 2020 Lithuania has refreshed the format of the national selection for Eurovision. The name was replaced from “Eurovizijos dainų konkurso nacionalinė atranka” to
“pabandom iš naujo!” (Eng: “Let’s try again!”).
The winners of the national selection were “The Roop” with the unforgettable song “On Fire“
1. “The Roop” will get a direct path for the final if they decide to participate again
2. The submission window for the national final of 2021 has opened today and will be closed on the 14th of December 2020.
3. The national selection will include no more than 6 shows (just like in 2020 and in contrast to 2015-2019).
4. The amount of competing acts will be decided according to the quality of the submitted entries. The amount of acts may reduce the amount of shows.
5. Songs can be submitted in English or Lithuanian.
6. The selected artists will be reveled on the 16th of January 2021.
7. Only citizens of the Republic of Lithuania may participate in the competition
8. One participant may participate in the Competition only with one song
In 2020, the young singer Destiny Chukunyere won the second season of “X-Factor Malta” and therefore has been chosen to represent Malta at Eurovision 2020. In 2015, she won “Junior Eurovision” for Malta.
The Maltese broadcaster TVM decided to internally select the singer to represent the country at Eurovision 2021.
On the 26th of October 2020, the submission window for Eurovision 2021 was officially opened. According to the broadcaster: “detailed process timings, guidelines and a style guide will be sent to each request.”.
Like in recent years, Malta is likely to collaborate with foreign writers and foreign composers.
In fact, the last time when Malta’s act for Eurovision was solely written and composed by Maltese was in 2017 – “Breathlessly” by Claudia Faniello.
The song will probably be selected internally.
Natalia Gordienko should have represented Moldova at Eurovision 2020, after she had won the national final in 2020 with the song “Prison“. Moldova was among the last countries to confirm they will internally select the same artist for Eurovision 2021, comparing to Eurovision 2020
The team behind Gordienko in Eurovision 2020 was the Dream Team, including Dimitris Kontopoulos, Philipp Kirkorov and Fokas Evangelinos
The singer has decided to work with the same team on her wishful act for Eurovision 2021.
However, this time they decided to abandon the ballad genre.
According to an interview Natalia gave , the song for Eurovision 2021 will be a rhythmic dance bop that reminds “Siren Song” by the Ukrainian singer Maruv.
The song will be about sex and youth people.
The country confirmed participation at Eurovision 2021 without giving any additional information about the selection process. Since 2016, the country choose internally their act for Eurovision.
May Vasil Garvanliev (who should have represented North Macedonia at 2020) represent North Macedonia at Eurovision 2021?
Norway will select their act for Eurovision 2021 via “Melodi Grand Prix 2021”.
The 2021 edition of MGP will include 5 semi finals followed by grand final to be set for February 20th, 2020. all six shows will be broadcast every Saturday starting January 16th, 2021 from the H3 Arena located just across the street form Eurovision 2010 host venue “Telenor Arena”.
As for the COVID-19 Restrictions, the new project manager of the MGP Stig Karlsen was queued that the shows will take place with no audience and that this season of MGP will look different from previous years but no other than spectacular as they will not deliver a halfway made product.
For the moment there are no rumored acts to participate in the contest but for sure, we will be happy to see last year winner Ulrikke Brandstorp among them. her entry for Eurovision 2020 “Attention” was one of the most popular songs to win the jackpot in Rotterdam but in order not to break the Norwegian MGP yearly tradition a decision was made she wont be internally selected for 2021
However, an unofficial source claims that Ulrikke Brandstorp won’t return as a competitor . but will be one of the hosts of the show!
Poland confirmed participation at Eurovision 2021.
In 2020, Poland held national selection for Eurovision 2020: “Szansa na Sukces – Eurowizja 2020 “.
The young singer Alicja Szemplińska won the national selection, ending in the first place both in jury voting and public voting.
The Polish broadcaster TVP expressed their wish to see Alicja Szemplińska represent them at Eurovision 2021. However, nothing becomes official until signing on the required agreement with the records label that stands behind the singer.
We believe that Alicja will perform for Poland at Eurovision 2021, regarding the fact that the singer has expressed her wishes to represent the country at Eurovision 2021.
The Portuguese national broadcaster RTP, has confirmed the country participation at Eurovision 2021.
The broadcaster will continue to use the mechanism of the traditional music festival “Festival Da Cançao 2021″ in order to choose an artist and a song for Eurovision 2021.
Portugal should have been represented by the singer Elisa at Eurovision 2020, after the singer had won the national final with the song “Medo De Sentir”
The singer has already stated that she wouldn’t compete in the national final for Eurovision 2021.
The broadcaster published the full regulation for participation in “Festival Da Cançao 2021″:
1. In February and March 2021, RTP will hold the 55th edition of the Song Festival (Festival da Canção 2021), to determine the song that will represent us at the 65th Eurovision Song Contest 2021.
2. The 2021 Song Festival will consist of two semi-finals and a Grand Final,
3. 20 songs will be include in the festival. In each semi-final, 10 artists will compete for 5 spots in the final.
4. The results of each show will be determined by 50% expert jury and 50% public voting.
5. In the Semifinals, the result of the televoting vote will be found by converting the calls into points, that is, the song with the highest number of calls will receive 12 points, the second highest number of calls receives 10 points, the third highest number receives 8 points. From the fourth most voted song to the tenth, they will receive, respectively and in this order, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points.
6. The result of the jury’s vote will be found by converting the total votes into points, that is, the song that has the most votes from the jury members will receive 12 points, the one with the second highest vote receives 10 points, the one with the third highest vote receives 8 points. From the fourth most voted song to the tenth, they will receive, respectively and in this order, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 points.
7. RTP invites 18 authors from various musical areas to, solo or together with other authors of lyrics and music, present an original and unpublished song, with a maximum duration of 3 minutes.
8. RTP will select the remaining two authors through the free submission of songs to the contest. All citizens of Portuguese nationality or residing in Portugal can compete for these places, whether or not they have published works, including, but not limited to, Portuguese people living outside Portugal, as well as citizens of other nationalities residing in Portugal.
9. A jury specially created by RTP for the purpose and which will include personalities of recognized merit in the scope of music, music production, radio and television, whose composition will be later disclosed, will select these two songs until the deadline of 30 November 2020.
10. The deadline for submitting a song is the 25th of November 2020.
11. It is not mandatory that the songs are interpreted in Portuguese.
The singer Roxen was internally chosen to represent the country at Eurovision 2021, after she was supposed to represent Romania at Eurovision 2020.
No additional information was given about the selection process of the song for Eurovision 2021
In 2020, the band “Little Big” was internally selected to represent Russia at Eurovision 2020 with the song “Uno”.
Almost a month ago, Russia has finally confirmed participation at Eurovision 2021.
Nevertheless, nothing has been mentioned about the artist/s for Eurovision 2021 and the selection process itself.
A post in the social media website which is very popular among Russian speakers – VK , has shed a light about Russia at Eurovision 2021.
According to that unofficial source that posted on Russian Eurovision fan club on VK , we can expect Little Big to represent Russia at Eurovision 2021:
The main content in the post claims that the CEO of the Russia Channel 1 Konstantin Ernst, confirmed that Little Big will carry the Russian flag for Eurovision 2021
However, we should be very careful since the Russian broadcaster haven’t released any information about Eurovision 2021 representatives.
The tiny country have internally chose the Italian singer Senhit to represent them at Eurovision 2021, following the plan to represent the country at Eurovision 2020.
Serbia confirmed participation at Eurovision 2021. However, the broadcaster hasn’t mentioned nothing about the selection process for 2021. In Last years, the country use the national selection “Beovizjia“. However, considering the success of the girl band Hurricane who should have represented the country at Eurovision 2020, we won’t be surprised by an internal selection.
The Slovenian broadcaster RTVSLO have internally selected Ana Soklič to represent Slovenia at Eurovision 2021. The singer won the national final for Eurovision 2020 with the dramatic and powerful ballad “Voda”.
Thereafter, the broadcaster announced a submission window was closed.
A record number of 191 songs have been submitted for Slovenia:
It is still unknown whether the broadcaster will held a national selection with 4-5 songs that will be all performed by Ana or the song will be internally selected.
The singer Blas Canto who should have represented Spain at Eurovision 2020, was internally selected to represent Spain at Eurovision 2021.
As always, Sweden will select their act for Eurovision via the “Melodifestivalen” competition.
The national selection will include 4 semi-finals, “second chance” round and grand final.
The dates for Melodifestivalen 2021 are:
Semi-final 1 – February the 6th 2021
Semi-final 2 – February the 13th 2021
Semi-final 3 – February the 20th 2021
Semi-final 4 – February the 27th 2021
Second Chance- March the 6th 2021
Grand Final – March the 13th 2021
All of the shows will be held in one city only and without any live audience. Stockholm will be the host city. The venue will be the Annex hall of Globe Arena or the large television studio at NEP Studios. Another change will be probably different hosts in each week.
And what about rumored artists?
According to the Swedish website Aftonbladet, we may watch the following artists competing at “Melodifestivlen 2021”:
1. The Mamas – the girl band who should have represented Sweden at Eurovision 2020 and were the backing vocalists for Sweden at Eurovision 2019, may return this year.
2. Jessica Andersson – The singer has already participated at Eurovision in 2003 as part of the duo Fame who performed “Give Me Your Love” and ended in the 5th place.
Since then, the singer participated as a solo artist at “Melodifestivalen” several times, including 2018 for example with the song “The Party Voice”
3. Alvaro Estrella
Alvaro’s first participation at “Melodifestivalen” was in 2014 where he performed the song “Bedroom”. Last year, he collaborated with Mendez and together they performed the song “Vamos Amigos”. In 2021, Alvaro will be competing as a solo artist.
The singer isn’t a stranger for the Eurovision stage. He was a backing vocalist for Sweden 2011, Sweden 2017 and Russia 2016.
Klara’s first participation at “Melodifestivalen” was in 2020 with the song “Nobody“. Unfortunately, she didn’t qualified for the final.
The singer presented at several song writing camps. Moreover, the broadcaster SVT has been looking for suitable songs that will fit Klara.
Johanna Jansson which is better known as Dotter may comeback as well. In 2020, she performed “Bulletproof” and ended in the 2nd place, just a point behind the winners (The Mamas).
“Bulletproof” is one of the biggest fan- favorites from The Eurovision 2020′s season.
The singer has also participated at “Melodifestivalen 2018” with the song “Cry” when she didn’t qualify for the final.
We hope to see Dotter ending in the top of t he chart and maybe the winner of “Melodifestivalen 2021″.
6. Tusse Chiza
Tusse Chiza is the winner of the last year “Swedish Idol“. Lately, the singer presented at several song writing camps. Moreover, the broadcaster SVT has been looking for suitable songs that will fit him.
The guest show of “Swedish Idol” Christer Björkman, told Tusse Chiza that he will be happy to see him competing at “Melodifestivalen”
Sannex was formed in the end of the the 1970’s. The members of the band have been changed along the years. In 2017, they were awarded as the “Dansband” of the year in Swedish Grammis.
Inviting the band to the “Melodifestivalen” will totally help to show diversity of music genres.
8. Sam-E & Wahl
It will be a collaboration of 2 rappers.
Sami Rekik better known as “Sam-E”, was part of the duo “Medina”.
While Christopher Vahlberg better known as “Wahl” was part of the duo “SödraSidan”.
The line-up of “Melodifestivalen 2021” is likely to be published in a special press conferee at the end of November 2020. However, a single name that’s already known in the line-up is Julia Alfrida who won the golden ticket for “Melodifestivalen” via the competition P4 Nästa 2020

Switzerland have internally chose the singer Gjon’s tears to perform for them at Eurovision 2021. The singer has been picked for Eurovision 2020 which was cancelled.
The singer has already started working on songs for Eurovision 2021. However, the sing will be chosen by a special 2 panels: jury panel and reduced public panel.
The host country of Eurovision 2021, have chose the intended artist for Eurovision 2020 to perform at Eurovision 2021.
The singer Jeangu Macrooy hasn’t reveled any further information about his song for Eurovision 2021. However, it is pretty clear the the song will be selected internally.
The broadcaster UA:PBC has internally chose the band Go_A to represent the country at Eurovision 2021. The band had won the national final for Eurovision 2020 with the song “Solovey“.
In the beginning, the broadcaster intended to hold a special edition if “Vidbir” (the national selection of Ukraine) where the band will perform up to 5 songs for Eurovision 2021.
However, according to Kateryna Pavlenko the lead singer of the band, things have been changed lately. The singer talked to the managers of UA:PBC and told them the band have already thought about the topic of their song for Eurovision 2021.
The singer mentioned that staying under quarantine made her think about the desired topic for the song. Nevertheless, the song hasn’t been written yet. Kateryna hints that she has to do some homework in order to complete the writing.
Furthermore, the song won’t be similar to “Solovey”. We can guess that the band will come up with another song in the Ukrainian language.
The United Kingdom was one of the last countries to confirm participation at Eurovision 2021.
It is till unknown how the broadcaster BBC will pick the act for Eurovision 2021.
